Thanks. Since I don’t have the numbers of Rs and Ds in congress in my mind, and I can’t remember if the vote to impeach is a simple majority or 2/3, what is the ramification if 55 Ds jump ship?

simple majority of those present and voting in house to impeach, supermajority (2/3)of those voting to convict in senate

Democrats control the House with a large enough majority to impeach Trump even if a few members vote no. The chamber has 233 Democrats, 197 Republicans and an independent, Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, who is expected to support impeachment. Four seats are vacant.

Impeachment fails.

Nancy needs 218 votes to win a majority of 435 House members. With 234 Dems (233 + Amash), Nancy can only afford to lose 16.

(There are 197 Republicans and 4 vacancies.)
