That Uplifting Tweet You Just Shared? A Russian Troll Sent It
Rolling Stone ^ | 11/25/2019 | By Linvill/Warren

Here’s what Russia’s 2020 disinformation operations look like, according to two experts on social media and propaganda.

Internet trolls don’t troll. Not the professionals at least. Professional trolls don’t go on social media to antagonize liberals or belittle conservatives. They are not narrow minded, drunk or angry. They don’t lack basic English language skills. They certainly aren’t “somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds,” as the president once put it. Your stereotypical trolls do exist on social media, but the amateurs aren’t a threat to Western democracy.

Professional trolls, on the other hand, are the tip of the spear in the new digital, ideological battleground. To combat the threat they pose, we must first understand them — and take them seriously.

That bulls*t article about “Russians” you just read in the compliant propaganda media? The Chinese Communist Party wrote, funded and approved it.

Meaning the Dems think they’re going to lose.

If they manage to eke out a win, the Russian stories will go away.

It’s always fascinating how the leftist media projects.

THEY are, by far, the largest source of trolling.

Did they? How is this version of "Russia, Russia, Russia!" any different than the 2016 version that was written, funded and approved by the Clinton Crime Foundation?

I always thought that Russians had better things to do, like drinking strong vodka, wooing beautiful women, and singing bawdy songs in cafes.

An “uplifting tweet” is “disinformation?” He problem is that the libs don’t know disinformation when they see it.

Interesting article:

‘In fall 2018, for example, a Russian account we identified called @PoliteMelanie re-crafted an old urban legend, tweeting: “My cousin is studying sociology in university. Last week she and her classmates polled over 1,000 conservative Christians. ‘What would you do if you discovered that your child was a homo sapiens?’ 55% said they would disown them and force them to leave their home.” This tweet, which suggested conservative Christians are not only homophobic but also ignorant, was subtle enough to not feel overtly hateful, but was also aimed directly at multiple cultural stress points, driving a wedge at the point where religiosity and ideology meet. The tweet was also wildly successful, receiving more than 90,000 retweets and nearly 300,000 likes.

‘This tweet didn’t seek to anger conservative Christians or to provoke Trump supporters. She wasn’t even talking to them. Melanie’s 20,000 followers, painstakingly built, weren’t from #MAGA America (Russia has other accounts targeting them). Rather, Melanie’s audience was made up of educated, urban, left-wing Americans harboring a touch of self-righteousness. She wasn’t selling her audience a candidate or a position — she was selling an emotion. Melanie was selling disgust. The Russians know that, in political warfare, disgust is a more powerful tool than anger. Anger drives people to the polls; disgust drives countries apart.

[...] ‘the IRA [Russia’s Internet Research Agency] was not created to collude with the Trump campaign. They existed well before Trump rode down that escalator and announced his candidacy, and we assume they will exist in some form well after he is gone. Russia’s goals are to further widen existing divisions in the American public and decrease our faith and trust in institutions that help maintain a strong democracy. If we focus only on the past or future, we will not be prepared for the present. It’s not about election 2016 or 2020.

‘The IRA generated more social media content in the year following the 2016 election than the year before it. They also moved their office into a bigger building with room to expand. Their work was never just about elections. Rather, the IRA encourages us to vilify our neighbor and amplify our differences because, if we grow incapable of compromising, there can be no meaningful democracy. Russia has dug in for a long campaign. So far, we’re helping them win.’

Laughable. Utterly laughable. And even if it were true, as far as I know a fact is a fact. If the uplifting meme, snarky comment, or deft rapier-like observation I retweet came from a Russian, so what?

Is it less true?

“Russia’s goals are to further widen existing divisions in the American public and decrease our faith and trust in institutions that help maintain a strong democracy. “

That idiotic line came to life when people began to ask a logical question. “If Russia wanted to give Trump an unfair advantage by hacking Hillary and passing it all to Trump, then why would Russia then report to Hillary that they had Trump (well known germophobe) caught in golden showers with prostitutes? It made no sense, why would they try to help Trump, and then try to hurt Trump right as they wanted the Obama sanctions gone?

The silly answer was a shift to the new meme. Russia helped both sides, because they want to make Americans lose faith in elections. And for what purpose, nobody ever explains. And nobody ever explains why Russia wanted to harm Trump who had a major campaign pillar of better relations with Russia, and him seeing no need for sanctions or hostilities, and that he though the US and Russia should blow up ISIS together.

The left has advanced so many lies, that now their lies are in direct conflict.

Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Of note: The US Arena of Ideas is enormous and fluid.

Ideas, inherently, are not a threat to a democratic republic.

Winning ideas is EXACTLY what we want from that arena.

It does not matter what the origin of the idea was.

And, of course, every nation with the means “interferes” in that arena.

I’ve talked with some actual Russians, and they all think this is hilarious.

People DO have to lead actual lives over there. They’ve got more pressing things to do than to troll Americans on Twitter.

“Russia’s goals are to further widen existing divisions in the American public and decrease our faith and trust in institutions that help maintain a strong democracy.”

Also, parse that lost phrase for immense gaslighting.

“decrease our faith and trust in institutions that help maintain a strong democracy.”

1) Last I checked we are not a democracy and the founders had nothing but contempt for democracy.

2) Who have we lost faith and trust in? It’s congress, the media, the FBI, the CIA, the DOD, NATO, etc. So in the eyes of this “Russia undermining institutions” theory, when we no longer trust those institutions, it’s a Russian plot, and we need to realize that they deserve our deep loyalty and love.

It’s Edward Bernays propaganda at it’s finest. America is subjected to a firehose of behavior and though modifying propaganda that is so pervasive, and non-stop, that it almost seems normal. And the firehose ain’t from Russia. It’s from DC and China.
