If you were to look at some of the writings of 18th century authors farting was as much a humorous thing then as it is today. Although treated more delicately then, everybody in the British empire liked a good fart joke. In fact, the colloquial name for butlers and other servants was “fart catchers”, for their obedient and obsequious trailing behind their masters.
