The man who ruined Doctor Who, Steven Moffat, and one-half of the duo behind the Sherlock Holmes reboot, Mark Gatiss, have teamed up together for a reboot of another classic story, Dracula. The new show will debut on BBC in 2020. Oh, and Dracula has been made bisexual while Van Helsing has been turned into a woman.
The USA Today Post is reporting that the BBC is proud and out about making Dracula a connoisseur of the alphabet soup, with Mark Gatiss telling press…
"He’s got broad tastes has this Dracula. It’s not just a collection of Sixties women with push-up bras this time. Dracula has never discriminated, in so far as he can tell the difference between the sexes. He goes for his food but also people who interest him.
“This goes right the way back. There’s a moment at the end of a Hammer film with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing when he goes to bite him and it’s very, very homoerotic for its time.”
According to the The Sun, the brand ruination doesn’t end there.
They note that Van Helsing, famous vampire hunter, will be portrayed by a woman. They slipped in the news about Van Helsing’s gender-swap at the very end of the article, writing…
"A woman will also replace vampire-hunter Professor Van Helsing in the adaptation, due to air next year.”
Plus they gave him as a companion a very "out" black lesbian.
I remember one episode where the lesbian companion was stuck in the past without the Doctor, and the android companion mentioned to her that some of the men found her attractive. She said "But I don't fancy any of them". I yelled at the TV, "Well, that's not a problem. Your problem is that none of them will fancy providing you with food or shelter otherwise, so you should get over yourself..."
Yeah, what's up with those producers trying to maximize ancillary revenue streams?
Alec (played by Pat Boone) was simply the movie version of Axel Lidenbrock (Prof. Lidenbrock's exuberant, naive nephew). So there was no significant change to the character. (Though I don't recall any singing in the novel.)

A shame how most Jules Verne English translations were bad ones for a long time. Gave him the reputation here of juvenile fiction author. Outside the US he was admired greatly. He tried to work with the latest facts and speculations of his time. Also didn’t push socialism like his rival H.G. Wells.
I no longer have anything to do with science fiction after being a book review columnist and nonfiction book author about the subject.

And apparently Syfy is making their Van Helsing lesbian - or at least flirting with lesbianism.
So now that the show is available on Netflix, I started watching it last night. I’m only one episode in but it is pretty cringey. Not only is Van Helsing a woman but she is a complete Mary Sue. And of course, she acts like a modern-day , snarky, 21st-century feminist rather than a 19th century female. Which completely takes you out of the story. Was just wondering if anyone else started watching this and what they thought.
BBC shows were primitive back in the 60s. They got to be very good in the 80s. Now they are remaking the same material for the third time and it's usually junk.
They weren't going to make a better Brideshead Revisted and couldn't outdo possibly the movie versions of A Room With a View or Howard's End. Diminishing returns.
Of course, there's a gay angle to everything now, but even without that, the stuff isn't that good.
