An assistant scoutmaster on Long Island has been charged with sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy at Boy Scout retreats and meetings over an 11-month period last year.

I knew that Mittens served on the BSA's National Executive Board for a time - I think back during the 1990s. 4 of his 5 sons earned the Eagle award. Of course, the LDS church made BSA its official male youth program for 11-14 year olds back in 1913 (which of course they elected to leave BSA in 2018). And I knew that he "helped" the MA Supreme Court legalize homosexual marriage during his 1 term as governor. But I hadn't heard this 1 about him wanting to force the local BSA councils in MA to accept homosexual members.

Correct. SCOTUS decided in 2000 that BSA, as a private organization had the right the set its membership rules. That all fell apart in JAN 2013 when BSA Past President Rex Tillerson led a rogue delegation of BSA National Executive Committee officers to change the membership standard to include open homosexual youths.

They were pressured by groups like the United Way (I believe that was one) who provided financial support to the BSA. They are the perfect example of what happens when you let the camel’s nose into the tent.

Correct again. I recall reading an article back in the early 2000s that >70 local chapters of the United Way (mostly located in east and left coast major cities, with a scattering of upper mid-west major cities) had voted to withhold funding from local BSA councils who had filed their annual grant requests.

I wonder how many FReepers have any first, or even second, hand knowledge of any of these reported abuses. I was a Cub/Boy Scout for about six years back in the 50s. I NEVER EVEN HEARD A RUMOR ABOUT ANY SUCH THING.
