Its Not Too Late: The Senate Can Still Stop the CASE Act
The House of Representatives has just voted in favor of the Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act (CASE Act) by 410-6 (with 16 members not voting), moving forward a bill that Congress has had no hearings and no debates on so far this session. That means that there has been no public consideration of the serious harm the bill could do to regular Internet users and their expression online.
The CASE Act creates a new body in the Copyright Office which will receive copyright complaints, notify the person being sued, and then decide if money is owed and how much. This new Copyright Claims Board will be able to fine people up to $30,000 per proceeding. Worse, if you get one of these notices (maybe an email, maybe a letterthe law actually does not specify) and accidentally ignore it, youre on the hook for the money with a very limited ability to appeal. $30,000 could bankrupt or otherwise ruin the lives of many Americans.
The CASE Act also has bad changes to copyright rules, would let sophisticated bad actors get away with trolling and infringement, and might even be unconstitutional. It fails to help the artists its supposed to serve and will put a lot of people at risk.
Even though the House has passed the CASE Act, we can still stop it in the Senate. Tell your Senators to vote no on the CASE Act.
TAKE ACTION - TELL THE SENATE NOT BANKRUPT REGULAR INTERNET USERS

On that bit alone you could have known in advance that the democrat controlled House would pass this bill.

I agree. Hope it dies in the Senate.
The Deep State announces the birth of a new deep state agency. Public yawns.
Vote yes if you are a knowledge creator.
When you used to go out to nightclubs in the 1960’s and 1970’s they used to have live music that would play the hits of the day.. No more! The bands now have to pay the record companies money to play the hits.. So don’t play them.. Alas No live bands!
Money goes to the agencies (ASCAP and BMI) that collect on behalf of the songwriters and song owners but NONE of that goes to them.
There is no logging of what band played what song, no reporting of what songs the DJ played between bands, no logging of what songs were heard on the tv while the game was on.
It is apportioned to the artists with hits. Even though Spotify does have an accurate accounting of which subscribers listened to what tracks, that money still just goes to the top charting artists.
ASCAP and BMI fees are merely a protection racket shakedown, pay up your protection fee or face legal pursuit for infractions. But the money doesn’t actually go to the affected artists.
Saw a job listing (low wage too) to sit in bars listening to the shows and logging infractions, recording audio, etc. Of course you might have to appear in court to defend your report.
Following in the EU’s footsteps...
The meme ban and link tax the EU passed was just the beginning.
Americans better take notice.
Another unaccountable bureaucratic dictatorship under the guise of doing something useful.
Does this mean that Google’s Youtube will go out of business?
