Pope Francis asked forgiveness Friday from Amazonian bishops and tribal leaders after thieves stole indigenous statues from a Vatican-area church and tossed them into the Tiber River in a bold show of conservative opposition to history’s first Latin American pope.
Francis insisted that the carved wooden statues of naked pregnant women were brought to the Vatican for display during his Amazon synod “without any intention of idolatry,” undercutting conservative claims that they were symbols of pagan, idolatrous worship.
He said carabinieri police had found the so-called Pachamama statues unharmed in the Tiber, and would consider letting the Vatican display them during a final Mass on Sunday wrapping up the Amazon meeting, but that no decision had been made.
“Above all, this happened in Rome and as the bishop of this diocese I ask forgiveness of the people who were offended by this gesture,” Francis told the synod hall. …

Conservatives are not racist. Conservatives wish to conserve the one true Church of Jesus Christ.
It was an offense not against conservative Catholics to bring those idols in to a Catholic Church. It was an offense against God. It was the duty of all Catholic men to take action to remove the idols from the Church.
It is a shame and a disgrace that the Bishops and Cardinals in the church when the idols were first brought in did not rise up and object to their presence. They should surrender their Man Cards.
