I was living in Japan in 1989 when Emperor Hirohito died. The entire nation pretty much shut down for 3-4 days. Quite the event.

My folks and I lived there in the 1950s.
I recall the marriage of the new emperor’s father.

The US Army did a live play by play of the parade on FEN Radio.
