The temblor hit about 12:19 a.m. with an epicenter at Compton Boulevard and Alameda Street, an intersection full of shops and not far from the Compton Courthouse, USGS said.

The quake originated at a depth of about 15 miles. People reported feeling the shaking as far as Oxnard and Garden Grove.

Multiple small aftershocks followed, including a magnitude 1.6 at 1:17 a.m. centered beneath Centennial High School in Compton, on the border with Willowbrook, and a magnitude 1.4 one minute later near the corner of Compton Boulevard and Wilmington Avenue, about a block west of the mainshock, USGS reported.

Home to two of my closest friends. Neither of whom reflect the stereotype but still love the place.

(it’s less violent than years past, but still known for being gang-ridden etc...)

President Trump is just fine tuning the earthquake machine that is in the basement of the White House.

I never experienced an earthquake til I moved to Panama this summer. Since then, I’ve been through a 4.7 and a 4.6, although both were located about 70 miles away. It was a little bit jolting watching items in the room dance around but, honestly, the construction trucks barreling across my mountain road are worse.

Compton—a lovely college town that two future presidents (both named Bush) once called home. One of my aunts grew up there.

Photos straight out of Compton show devastation whose origins may or may not be related to the earthquake.

Italy in 1976 or 77 around 2am living in steel reinforced concrete barracks built by the Nazis. Thought my bunk mate was having a Yuge go at himself till I woke long enough to figure out the whole place was shaking. Next time I was driving in a ton and 1/2 truck mid afternoon felt nothing but saw all the buildings on base emptying out of personnel. Yeah it’s something to live through.
