iOS users are spending anywhere from $$1,249 to $1,449 for Apple’s iPhone 11 Pro Max, but a new report has found it costs the tech giant less than half to make its sought after handset.

A teardown of the smartphone has revealed that including parts and assembly, the Cupertino company is only paying $490.50 for a finished handset.

However, the $490.50 price tag does not include shipping, wages of people who handle assemble and costs of services that are free with each iPhone such as AppleCare and iCloud syncing.

While I’m no fan of Apple, R&D costs money. Code doesn’t just fall from the sky for free. Neither do chip designs. Or anything else. If the only cost was parts everything in the world would be cheaper.

What's wrong with a healthy profit margin?

If a company creates a superior product and service, then they ought to be able to command the best price-point (and margin) that they can obtain.

Don’t forget that minimum wage and Obamacare costs!

You always double your cost.

Minimum.

That’s the way business works.

The sad part is in my friend’s Brooklyn pizzeria/restaurant (upper class joint) the pizzas start at 16 and he says after ALL costs, they make 4 bucks a pie

However, the $490.50 price tag does not include shipping [$8.50 insured], wages of people who handle assemble (sic) [Pennies for slave labor] and costs of services that are free with each iPhone such as AppleCare [avg cost screen repair $22] and iCloud syncing [scaled, essentially free for Apple].

they make 4 bucks a pie

Due to costs of products and labor? Or price of doing biz in NYC?

I use LG Rebel #4 (version) that cost me about the same. Has 16Gb native storage and I put in a 16GB mini SD card so I have all I need for photos, texting and phone calls. When I bought a computer in 1998 I had to pay $300 to have a 10GB IBM hard drive included in the build. I was very happening and very cutting edge with that size hard drive!

A lot of restaurants have thin margins on food. The big margins come from the alcoholic beverages served with it.
