A mother who said she would have aborted her beloved son if she had known he had Down's Syndrome has won a massive NHS compensation payout after antenatal tests were not carried out.

Although she is now devoted to four-year-old Aleksander, Edyta Mordel told the High Court in London she would have terminated her pregnancy if she had known he would be born with Down's as she 'would not have wanted her child to suffer the way that disabled people suffer'.

Miss Mordel, 33, was devastated when Aleksander was born disabled at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2015 - but has since devoted herself to caring for her beloved son.

At the High Court today, Mr Justice Jay ruled against the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust and awarded Ms Mordel - who wants more than £200,000 - the right to massive damages.

He said the sonographer who conducted Mrs Mordel's scan had failed to obtain her 'informed consent' to going ahead without the Down's Syndrome screening.

Previously, Ms Mordel's lawyers estimated her claim to be worth more than £200,000, which she would use to cover the increased costs of bringing up a disabled child.

Miss Mordel insists she asked for checks to be carried out during her pregnancy. The case is legally termed as a 'wrongful birth' because Miss Mordel says she would have had an abortion if she had known of the condition.

Figures from 2017 revealed that the NHS Litigation Authority had paid £70million to parents in 'wrongful birth' cases in five years.

For the record, my brother-in-law was adopted from an off-the-boat Polish couple who were unable to care for him. He is the light of my mother-in-law's life, and brings joy to all who know him.

We live in Spain. Not long ago we saw a girl of about 13 with Down’s Syndrome playing with her tablet outside of a shop. I told my wife she should take her picture because soon you may never see a child like that again. The UK is one of several European countries that are aborting babies with DS as soon as they find out. Iceland brags about eradicating DS in their country.
By the way the girl was dressed and playing with her tablet it was obvious that she was in a loving family. It was also obvious she was going to live a long, happy life, one that is increasingly being snuffed out for others with her condition.

Gee whiz!...My grandmother's cousin had a child with a severe case of Downs Syndrome. Ruthie was 28 when they came to visit us when I was about 11. Us kids didn't mind her hanging around even though she was essentially 6 years old in her mind. We were about to strap roller skates on her because she really thought she could do it...However, Aunt Marcella caught on to what we were doing and put a stop to it instantly. Ruthie lived to be 70 and Aunt Marcella died a few years later. Uncle Karl died decades before that. Her brother Karl worked as a DoD photographer and I know that they all loved Ruthie just the same as they otherwise would have and maybe more than that. They wouldn't have changed a thing about their beloved Ruthie.

True, I wish there were adoption agencies that specifically catered to such cases, where the kids need some extra love and care. All the agencies are focused on the few healthy kids that are easily adopted, when many Christian families would be happy to come forward to help save a child like this.
