I doubt very much that it was a haunting. So I’m guessing murder or simply voluntary disappearance.

Sounds like so-called Lilliputian Syndrome, the hallucinating of dwarfish creatures, which is associated with sleep deprivation. Crack or powder cocaine, or meth could have been checked for in a toxocology test, but the remains are said to be beyond that.
