New Mexico had the honor of providing the National Christmas Tree this year, including many smaller trees for various federal buildings in Washington. Though the firewood ban has been lifted, the ban on other activities remains, including cutting for these Christmas trees. Whether a judge will lift the ban in time for the tree to be cut and delivered for display in early December remains unknown.

We have the radical enviro-groups to thank for this fiasco - their win in court requires "protection" of the spotted owl* at any cost including stopping all resource activity in forests in two states.

(* Studies in the Pacific northwest show that the owl is a closely related smaller cousin of the common barred owl, and in some cases they interbreed. Because the barred owl is a slightly bigger and thus superior predator that will invade spotted owl territory, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has had a program to "harvest" (i.e. kill) barred owls which they consider an "invasive species.")
