If there were no government interference in mileage, emissions or safety, carmakers could make a comfortable $5,000 car that would easily last for 300,000 miles

He only has 88,975 km on it after 7 years. That's about 55,000 miles or less than 8,000 per year. Do other golf carts last 10,000 times around the course?

Anyone this stupid, buying a Tesla, is dim enough to try for a selfie on an interstate. Never underestimate the Left.

Compared to less than 6k to rebuild the 327 in my 64 when the time comes, That is about $500 more than the leaf battery replacement!
The engine rebuild is not really equivalent to the battery replacement.
A proper analogy would be a gas tank replacement which I would guess would be less than $500.
An engine rebuild would be like replacing the electric traction motors.

From the article:
The tab included $750 for labour and $29,600 for the battery plus the 10 per cent GST.

From Nissan:
$5499 including labor.

I agree but right now it’s probably better to get a Prius or a Volt. My family has one of each.

I have my very serious doubts about electric cars having much of a future, they have come and gone since the 1920s. China has graveyards full of electric vehicles and the support equipment.

I don’t drive an electric car, but the number seems a bit high. Perhaps this is an Australia-specific problem:

[Battery replacements are now available for purchase at your certified Nissan LEAF dealers in the United States. The suggested retail price of the Nissan LEAF battery pack is $5,499. This price includes and requires a return of your original battery pack (valued at $1,000) to the dealer in exchange for the new battery. This price does not include tax, installation fees or an installation kit required for 2011 and 2012 vehicles. The MSRP for the installation kit (which includes brackets and other minor parts required to retrofit the newer pack to original vehicles) is approximately $225. Nissan expects the installation to take about three hours. However, dealers set the final pricing, so we recommend confirming with your local retailer.]
