Pete Buttigieg might get himself canceled, but it will be worth it. During a radio interview this week, the South Bend, Indiana, mayor turned Democratic presidential candidate approached un-woke territory. Buttigieg was asked about the liberal news outlets that specifically cover and cater to the gay and transgender communities, such as the Advocate, Queerty.com, Out magazine, and more. Mayor Pete had harsh words for them, essentially saying it isn’t representative of the community and makes non-flamboyant men like himself feel ostracized from the gay community. As reported by the Washington Examiner, Buttigieg told the radio host that he “can’t even read the LGBT media anymore,” because it’s all, ‘too gay, not gay enough, wrong kind of gay.'”

In 1969 my wife and I were staying with friends on Long Island and on the week end they took us to Fire Island.
He warned us that a lot of people were rich and queer but wouldn't 'do anything' to the tourists.
We were walking on the boardwalk when we were approached by two people and a monkey, {a white fag guy and a black body builder, dressed in a woman's bathing suit} walking with a monkey on a leash.
My wife, a very young, innocent and ignorant, woman from a small town, blurted out, "Oh look, there's a monkey with a n_--_r on a leash".
Very embarrassing, but it was not confrontational nor even worth a second glance from the 'boys'.
Later, they saw us in a beach bar, and sent a round of drinks to our table.
In today's world, we would have been dead on the beach.

The entire scene you describe is hilarious, especially the dialog. You’re right though, the same wording today would most likely cause a meltdown.
I can hear someone like Rodney Dangerfield telling that joke.

They must be thinking that the US is not quite yet ready to see their President meeting with World leaders with bright red lipstick, earings, wearing tighties and all decked out in full rainbow attire. Yet. But, given enough time it will be required.
When they later bought us a round of drinks, my wife, {by this time she was tipsy} said, very quietly, "Go over and thank the monkey". We all passed and quickly got out of the bar before it all went south.
I think the moderator in the next dimm debate should ask him if he is a top or a bottom. The voters have a right to know.

He’s only a ‘contender’ because he served in the military and mentions religion from time to time. WHAT religion, I don’t know for lack of recognition.
