You simply cannot replace or replicate the attitudes that people had back in that era - remember, virtually all of the stars of these movies were actually in WW2, and the military advisors definitely were. No how, no way that such movies should be remade.

Not sure if you're aware, but there is going to be a re-telling of Midway coming out in November. Certainly the CGI allows for a level of front-seat realism that wasn't available to the makers of Tora, Tora, Tora. We'll have to see how the history and acting compare, but the trailer looks promising:

If you think about it, Gone With The Wind was mad 70 years after the Civil War. A WWII movie made today would be 70 years after WWII.

One reason why I like the old movies from the 1930s is that they were made much closer to the time periods they were attempting to depict, meaning that the people who made the movies either were alive in those periods, or had parents and grandparents who were alive in those periods.

I believe there is a certain authenticity that comes from that.
