Why is this word used in the news? Is it to intentionally influence the English language to adopt Spanish words?

No more than the word "garage" is intentionally used to influence the English language to adopt French words.

It has a specific meaning in the context of large American cities, particularly in the northeast. You know one when you see it.

It’s shorter than saying ‘privately-owned convenience store in a Spanish-speaking urban neighborhood’. It’s very descriptive in news stories. It is such a good description, I’m surprised it’s allowed.
