I agree with you. They can be elegant, they can have deep meaning. I don’t necessarily have a negative opinion of them or the person wearing them. I’ve seen many I like or can respect.

When you get to the point of having flames on your neck, or just stupid stuff that is neither elegant or meaningful, then I question your decision making ability.

Want really offend a young person who’s considering a tattoo? Tell them that it may cost a few more dollars but a really good artist can take or make most images as a temporary tattoo so they can “test drive” it. If they don’t like it then they have the option of letting it wash off rather than painful laser removal later. They acted like I was trying to talk them out of the whole idea which I wasn’t. I guess they were afraid that if they thought about it too much or had the option of turning back they wouldn’t go through with it.

People who have the least to feed their kids are the ones with the most tats. Title holds true. Either they made reckless decisions with their purchasing power between tats v. feeding the children or reckless decisions which resulted in having 6 kids before 25 or both.

“I see so many women, and men, who have received the gift of physical beauty that opens so many doors, and decided they could improve on it with these cartoons. It’s sad”

Yes, see it all the time. Incredibly beautiful women with tats all over and faces full of metal.

I thought the tat craze would have ended by now.

Allyssa Milano's. Broken rosary, hmm. She's added more since these. Maybe she'll get another to commemorate her loss to Cruz.

I remember when the only people who had tattoos seemed to be criminals

I worked with locked up kids at one time. Many had homemade/prison-type tattoos. Some cutting, and ink and you’re there. Many featured misspellings and most were quite amateurish. They were proud of them, though.

A 20 something relative couldn’t wait to show off his Mickey Mouse tat, uh, down there. Told him he’s going to regret it one day. He’s 40 something now but I don’t have the nerve to ask about it but have lots of jokes ready if the subject ever comes up at family reunions.

This guy has very calm and logical arguments against tattoos, but does it in a way that is aimed at young people going for their first tattoo, not directed at people who already have them.

Blue Collar Logic: The Case Against Tattoos-Part 1

Blue Collar Logic: The Case Against Tattoos-Part 2

I judge people on an individual basis when that is possible, and I withhold judgement on people until I have had a chance to interact with them, without judging them on their appearance whenever that is possible.

For me, it isn't possible when I see someone with tattoos on their face, neck, and head. I make immediate judgments there simply because it is a visceral type of thing to see them in those locations.

I don't judge people based on impressions of their height, weight, scars, or attractiveness, though I very much do judge people on things they have control of...their clothes, hair styles, cleanliness, or...tattoos. These are things that people make conscious choices in, and if someone is a dirtball, has their hair dyed green, wears inappropriate or damaged clothes in situations they shouldn't, or has tattoos on their head, face, or neck, I do make judgments on that.

I will keep an open mind until I know someone or interact with them, but I do have first impressions, and those things don't make a positive one with me.

I dated a woman who had a butterfly tat on her belly that was bisected by surgery. Stitched up and healed it looked like a green blob.

I saw a middle age woman the other day with a full upper arm tat of a Care Bear riding a Unicorn.

A guy I play basketball with (he's probably 25) recently showed up with a new tattoo on his calf, from knee to ankle - An evil clown holding a knife dripping with blood. I'll admit, the artwork was really good. Incredible detail. The funny thing is - he's the nicest, most polite kid you ever would meet, on the court and off.

Back when I was in the Guard, Tattoos were illegal for soldiers. We were informed about that at in initial training at Ft. Leonard Wood and periodical thereafter at my home unit. Only one soldier in one of our combat platoons was tattooed. It was small, covered, on his chest and hidden by him.

He only told a couple of us about it. It was somewhat of a copy of the air assault badge. He regretted it later. We teased him, saying that it looked somewhat like the little helicopter had his nipple for a sling load.
