Don’t forget that Rey is a female (I think), so she is literally perfect in every way, and needs no further development, because she was born fully developed by virtue of her vagina.

And if the director/producer dared have her fumbling around some dirty old swamp or moronically banging her head on the ceiling of Yoda’s hut, the fem-nazis would be up in arms...

I was a Trekkie before they became Trekkers.

Mary Sue was invented by a female Trekkie in fan fiction in the early Seventies. She was already jaded by all the teenage prodigies (see later Wesley Crusher in STNG) cropping up in mediocre fanzines. James Kirk was truly a prodigy, but he had earned his success: He was “a walking stack of books” in the STOS - before J. J. Abrams rebooted ST and made him a Marty Stu who could drop out of the Academy and be an all-around jackass, and yet still end up beating everybody older and more experienced at the game. Pathetic!

To make comparison:

Though her character was certainly used for SJW propaganda, Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel was emphatically not a Mary Sue (as many journalists who do not understand the derivation of the term asserted). She was an experienced adult, with extensive training in both the Terran USAF and Kree Strike Force, and one imbued with Kree powers from the explosion.

In contrast, Rey is emphatically a Mary Sue: an adolescent with some random experience and expertise, but not nearly enough to account for her almost instantaneous mastery of both foreign technology and the mysterious Force.

Her Hero’s Journey took no time and effort at all: She arrived full grown, in effect. It makes the entire saga feel phony and boring. She did not earn it.

Star Wars [SW] now is Star Justice Wars [SJW].

Initially appealing because of the fast pace and special effects, JJ’s reboot of Star Trek was in fact pathetic. A vastly dumbed down version of a series already dumbed down for the general audience, it’s almost a parody of the original and sci fi in general. JJ destroyed Star Trek and then proceeded onto Star Wars, claiming that anyone who didn’t like what he did just “hated women”. I guess we’re supposed to like male heroes being turned into pathetic whiners who are afraid of their own shadows, or adolescent-minded idiots who bumble their way comically through each crisis.

Agreed. And on that note, Honoka from Dead or Alive 5 Last Round and Dead or Alive 6 is not a Mary Sue either, as her bio makes clear she trained in secret regarding her fighting abilities, it’s established that she inherited Raidou’s copy-based fighting techniques, and more importantly, in DOA6, it’s made clear that even her copying on sight is by no means perfect, as several advanced moves she utilizes can only work so long as her body has actually mastered them (case in point, when she tried to copy Ayane’s fighting style, it resulted on her landing square on her butt). Not to mention many times in DOA6 she actually LOSES against her opponents (Tina, Christie, Ayane, etc.), several of whom are a LOT more experienced than her.

And while Captain Marvel is definitely a poorly done character in her film (only existing for SJW purposes, and being more of a misandrist than genuinely nice), she’s definitely no Mary Sue, any more than Samus Aran from Metroid was (and let’s face it, Samus is actually pretty similar to Captain Marvel, albeit a LOT nicer).

Rey most certainly is a Mary Sue, though, probably also Alice from the Resident Evil films as well. I’d list Ash Ketchum from Pokémon as a Marty Stu (though... wasn’t that a Gary Stu?) in Kanto, although even he had his challenges anyway, losing his fair share of battles, and there were a couple of gym badges he did genuinely earn in direct combat, namely Lt. Surge as well as Koga, Blaine, and to a lesser extent Team Rocket. Maybe also AG, though at least he had experience under his belt, level resets notwithstanding (though his Hoenn mons might qualify as Gary Stus, especially by the time of the third badge onward).

I agree with you, and I’ve read about the Mary Sue when the last StarWars movie came out, but wasn’t aware of it previously.

The ironic thing is, all the people who want a MarySue social justice aligned heroine have been cheated out of a great character arc or a full tour adventure because of the very thing you bring up.

Of course, that’s a paradox isn’t it?
If they actually took the time to give her flaws and challenges to overcome as well as earning her mettle (leveling up, so to speak) so that fans could really revel in her well deserved glory, then she wouldn’t be a MarySue. heh

It’s Disney. How much more woke and gay do you want?

Well, there’s one thing that’s arguably even MORE woke and gay than Disney productions under Iger (including Star Wars). And that’s the DC Comics-based TV shows under the direction of Greg Berlanti, considering they’re SO woke, especially Supergirl, that many times they completely forget that Donald Trump doesn’t even exist in their universe, but that if anything Hillary Clinton or her equivalent is the president and end up attributing stuff about Trump and his promises like implementing a border wall to keep Mexicans out while Marsden was still president (you know, the one who by phone and pen signed into law allowing instant legal citizen status for aliens?). Say what you will about Disney’s production faults, at least they don’t get so blinded by TDS that they end up misapplying Trump stuff to people who aren’t even Trump. Not to mention the various Berlanti productions made several characters gay for no real reason other than due to his own sexuality, many of whom weren’t even that originally, either in the original comics or, heck, even in the prior seasons of the same show (eg, Alex Danvers being made a lesbian starting with Season 2 despite her being straight in season 1 with no real problem interacting with the opposite sex).

And just to clarify, when I said “they don’t get so blinded by TDS that they end up misapplying Trump stuff to people who aren’t even Trump.”, I mean applying those stuff to characters who weren’t even intended by the writers to be Trump in the first place.
