My mother is still taking steroid eye drops after contracting shingles 8 years ago.

I got the shingrax vaccine in the spring. She’s been thru hell. Anything to avoid that.

Good luck getting the Shingrix vaccine. The waiting lists are months long. We've been waiting on two pharmacy lists for at least 6 months. Maybe your doc has some pull.

First shingles was in 6th grade. I’m the 4th of 5 kids close together. No idea how I got it. Had chicken pox when I was younger. Nature is funny. Had shingles again when was 32. Had 2 kids at the time. One had already had chicken pox, the toddler we thought MIGHT get chicken pox since I was dealing with shingles. She didn’t get the pox until 3 years later.

I’m not inclined to get the shingles vaccine yet...but maybe down the road. Hope you do well with it.

VA doesn't give them hereabouts. Too $$$. However, you may wish to check with a local "seniors group" or 55 and over org. Many offer the two shot Shingrix vaccine free of charge. County health agency another source. $300 otherwise.

Would recommend you get the shots. I felt hung over for a couple days. A bit dizzy at times. Otherwise? Good to go. If you ever saw anyone with a full blown case of shingles you will wish you had gotten the vaccine!

BIL had a pretty severe case, several years ago. About the same age as your brother is, now.

He started, immediately, on the anti-virals Rx as well as several natural supplements.

Silver topical ointment saved his hide, and staved the pain, for him.

Having shingles is a miserable experience, with the worst pain often coming as the nerves heal after an outbreak. Such post-herpetic neuralgia can last for years and be so bad as to be disabling or to even prompt suicide.

I recommend that your brother consult a neurologist or immunologist who is expert in dealing with shingles. The doctor may prescribe an antiviral drug to suppress the flareup and capsaicin ointment for the pain. A doctor may also advise against getting the vaccine due to the elevated risk of an adverse reaction if one has already had an outbreak.

For shingles pain, try frequent hot baths, especially if the pain is internal. Benadryl and an OTC pain killer (I prefer aspirin) should also help. A TENS device might also be tried.

In my experience, vitamin and mineral deficiencies can play a role in a shingles outbreak, especially deficiencies of Vitamins A and D and magnesium. This may also suggest previously unrecognized dietary and gastrointestinal problems, with supplementation and dietary changes then advisable in order to promote recovery.

The best way to start checking for GI problems is to keep a detailed written food and beverage and symptom and bowel function diary for several weeks. That should help to reveal possible GI issues and provide a basis for referral to a GI specialist. In time, your brother may be shown to have celiac disease or another form of food sensitivity or intolerance that helped to create the conditions for the shingles outbreak. I wish him the best.

Finished 2 shot series a few months ago. Shoulder was very sore and had flu like symptoms for a day after shots but better than getting shingles.

My husband has had shingles and it was horrible. He was fortunate that it was not on his face but the neuropathic pain he dealt with for months was just awful. He has had the shots. He got the first one years ago and then, the newer set more recently. He says he can occasionally feel the tingle where it would have started up again. It is nerve-wracking.
As soon as they OK’d the newer vaccine for 50+, I got it. I was lucky in that I was able to get injections done. I had no side effects except my arm was really sore.

Shingles is something I would not wish on anyone (well, almost anyone)

Had the original shot a few years ago. Haven’t got the 2nd one yet...which is a two shot series by the way. No adverse affects from the first. Had shingles in the 60’s and it’s a bitch. Wife got it on forehead recently and fortunately it didn’t get to her eyes...that could have meant blindness. I’d say get the newest shots.

My husband and I had the shots in the spring of 2018 and so far, neither of us has gotten shingles. My arm was sore after the first one (there are 2) for a day or two but that was about it.

Last year, I got a small spot of shingles about 6 inches under my arm.
My whole rib cage hurt on that side.

The only thing that worked for me was this

Diclofenac Sodium Topical Gel 1%

Manufactured by Novartis

Kutapressin (sp?) is something my old doctor( passed away now) used to treat shingles with. It worked for other stuff too.

My reaction to the second shot have been going on for over a year, though it is a bit less persistent.

Burning and intensely itchy red streaks appear at random all ovre my body though they apps mostly on my arms and legs. If I give in a scratch them, they immediately turn into hives and the itching gets unbearable. They then turn into bruises.

Personally, for me the shot reaction was worse than the shingles.

Had mild shingles at 18. got the old shot which didn’t work so I get the new shots which supposedly work. The vaccine industry is a Zombie Graveyard. No telling what kind of shit comes out of there.
