No he doesn’t. Sorry, but a president is not a dictator. No matter how much I like Trump, he is wrong on this one.

I don’t know if the President has the authority to order the owners of a private company to leave another nation. At the same time I think it would be in the interest of those companies to pay attention to what the President is saying.

A decision made by a President could have economic repercussions that could cause serious damage to a companies bottom line if they choose to ignore his recommendation.

Correct, and stupid to talk about. It won’t help at all in the current China struggle. His trolling habit is getting to be a bit much.

I look upon it in this way , China is an enemy on an economic and militaristic level . The business practices within a communist country as compared to our constitutional republic are like night and day . I begrudge no company to make a dollar but , if we as a nation demanded all proprietary and intellectual properties in order for a foreign company to manufacture within our borders our courts would be deluged with cases arguing the legality of such actions. This to me is an emergency that has been long brewing . The President Donald John Trump to me is VERY prudent to shine the light of day on this long smoldering situation which is abetted by congress and the senate who take monies from lobbyists who represent this communist dictatorship who DOES manipulate its currency and also has definite militaristic intentions when all the while weakening our ability to produce a basic “widget” which leaves our beautiful Republic extremely vulnerable . Go for it President Trump and confront this adversary . I love this man and pray that God protects him from the Godless heathens who have sold their soul and see nothing wrong with the undermining of our nation . (The idiots have forgotten the myriad of laws they pass and now it bites them in the rear...I LOVE IT!)

From InstaPundit

SO A LOT OF PEOPLE ON FACEBOOK ARE SAYING THAT OF COURSE PRESIDENT TRUMP CAN’T “ORDER” A PRIVATE BUSINESS TO GET OUT OF CHINA. In fact, he almost certainly can do just that, so long as he makes the right declaration. Under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, better known in the trade as IEEPA, presidents have a virtual blank check on regulating economic transactions with other countries, so long as they declare a national emergency — which can include one based on economic threats.

I’m not saying this is a good idea, but the people saying that “Trump’s an idiot, presidents can’t do that” are displaying their ignorance. Presidents absolutely can do that. Note that at present Trump is spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt, by tweeting the order but NOT making the declaration that would be required to give it effect. It’s thus a shot across the bow — a metaphor that fits this quite well, really.

See also this earlier post, discussing an Obama action, and U.S. v. Spawr Optical, a disturbing but unexceptional example of judicially endorsed presidential power over international trade.

Here is an interesting article by Thomas Lifson on whether the President has the authority to "order" companies.

It's worth clicking through to the full American Thinker article.

The fact that he is trying to stop fentanyl coming in from China, while a positive action worthy of support , is also a tactic admission of a policy failure by doj policy that continues to blame opioid overdose deaths on prescription opioids.

The International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) enacted by Democrat-controlled 95th Congress, and signed into law by Democrat President Jimmy Carter. Both Democrats, and Republicans have utilized this Bill. There are currently several active emergencies, ten of which were declared by Obama.

I applaud the presence of a backbone, I cringe at the thought of its abuse potential and require clarification in regards to its proposed application that would authorized any President to directly command the actions of a private corporation, business or entity.

I regards to American companies ceasing business with China, It would be a reasonable decision until trade relations improve or at least show signs of consistency.

One would think if China has been stealing from the
US and POTUS calls them out, that American
companies would want to leave and not have
to be “ordered” out. An EO could make it
illegal for any American compay to do business
with China. There are already countries on
that list.
