cell phone | 8/23/2019 | me

Beware. The old social security scam is surfacing once again. A call comes in saying they have found a misuse of your social security number and want you to call back. You can guess what happens then. Freepers and others, beware.

A similar scam exists surrounding a "missed jury duty call"

I got one of those calls. I immediately knew it was a scam because it was from “The Department of Social Security”.

I guess they think it gives them some protection by not using the correct name.

Why can’t the cops call them back for us?

The reputedly stolen SS used by Obama is supposedly available on the internet. I will look for it an inform anybody who calls that is my legitimate number.

I did call the Sheriff’s office. I wasn’t wanting to start an investigation, just wanted to make them aware of it.

Tell you want the name and address of the person who misusing your SS and that you could take care of it yourself since you were a sniper in the military.

I always answer unknown calls by saying “Thank you for calling the Consumer Fraud Enforcement Division, may I help you?”

I have had 2 in-state, different exchange calls in the last 2 days. If I don’t recognize the number, I don’t answer on my cellular. If it is important, they will leave a voicemail.

Several states are meeting with several major cellular carriers to try to figure out a way to combat robocalls. I don’t expect much to come from the meeting.

I use Tracfone and they have a caller-ID program: CallDetector. Most major carriers already have similar programs. The programs work so-so.

When this scum leave me a vm, if I’m bored I turn off my caller ID and call them back. I identify myself as Nigel Tufnel and spend an inordinate amount of time with them (every min with me is a min they don’t hurt someone else). I give them my address (1060 West Addison, Sfaccim, IL) and keep going until someone hangs up (usually them).

A good friend of mine received one of these calls recently.

She’s the District Manager of the local Social Security office.

I hear the conversation was interesting.

Drats! Can't do that, as I periodically have my business number forwarded to my cell phone.

However, next time I decide to change the name of my WIFI network, I might try "Consumer Fraud Protection Division" or some variant thereof.

Currently I'm using "Homeland Security Monitoring Van."

I also use "FBI Monitoring Van" and "Mytown PD Monitoring Van," where Mytown is actually the name of my municipality.

I usually respond with “Bernalillo County Sheriffs Department, Consumer Fraud Division”. They hang up pretty quickly.

Was that an actual call? I’ve tried trolling TMs but I’m not a good enough liar to drag it out like that. He’s absolutely brilliant.
