In 2017 Vladimir Putin told students at a youth festival in Sochi that genetic engineering could create soldiers who feel no pain or fear, which could be “scarier than a nuclear bomb.”

No pain and no fear add up to a short life expectancy. They would not know when to stop to preserve their own lives.

That argues for giving expensive robots of the future something like pain or something like fear, if they are going to be doing dangerous jobs, and if their builders prefer they don’t throw their “lives” down the toilet at nine zillion dollars a pop. Which is good; I wouldn’t want to battle terminator-like Schwarzenegger robots that don’t experience either fear or pain! They’d still be scary as hell with fear and pain programmed in, but it’d be nice knowing they had that achilles heel holding them back a little.
