A limited-edition McLaren road car with a gold-plated engine bay has become the British manufacturer's most expensive vehicle to ever sell at auction.
The 1994 McLaren F1 LM - standing for Le Mans - went under the hammer on Friday during RM Sotheby's Monterey auction in California - which is widely regarded as the calendar's biggest and most expensive sale of collectible vehicles.
Before the auction, the unique car had been given an estimated sale price of $21million to $23million - the higher of which would have made it the most expensive British-built car to sell at auction in history.
However, the hammer dropped well below that landmark figure, though the winning bidder paid a staggering $19.8million (£16.2m).

I’d rather have a Tesla.... NOT!
Eh.. very disappointed in the article pictures. Gold is too gaudy, but I did want to see the car itself.
Be still my heart, that is breathtakingly beautiful machinery.

‘Mr. Bean’ - Rowan Atkinson, had one of these...had a fairly bad accident with it, cost over $1,000,000 to fix it.
He sold it thereafter for $12,000,000.
Jay Leno has one, if I recall correctly he paid around $800,000 for it.
It’s the only car ever to be crash tested in the US with NO damage for the 30 MPH frontal crash. It just bounced back...
The company my wife worked for, before she retired, moved into a new building in Buckhead, one of Atlanta’s swankier neighborhoods. My wife and I went to her office so she could retrieve some things one Saturday, and she decided to use the valet parking instead of just going in the parking garage where she usually parked. There were two McLarens and a Lamborghini parked in front of a restaurant at the curb. The parking lot was full of ‘regular’ cars, the most common being Porsche Cayennes, the rest were mostly BMWs and Mercedes. My wife’s Nissan Maxima was way out of place in that gaggle of autos.
This morning I read an article in Road & Track about the only McLaren F1-licensed mechanic in the US. Quite a car.

The Culprit
LOL look at those sled flanges on the front outer corners. I wonder what those are for.
BTW Rowan Atkinson did an automobile documentary called "THE DRIVEN MAN", which is very interesting. I empathize with him as he drives away in the last scene. You will have to watch it to see what I mean.
