NEW YORK - As the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and New York City Police Department look to crack down on fare beating, new police numbers reportedly show minorities make up the bulk of people stopped for jumping the subway turnstiles.
According to the Daily News, 86 percent of the nearly 700 people arrested from April through June were Black or Latino.
Blacks and Latinos also made up 71 percent of those hit with a summons for fare evasion over that same period.
The News says NYPD numbers over the past few years show more people of color have been stopped for fare beating than whites.
Earlier this summer, Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered 500 more officers to be assigned to subway and bus stops with high levels of fare evasion.
The MTA says it expects to lose $260 million to fare beating this year.

There appears to be an opportunity here for a scholarly, in depth study to find out the cause of this disparity.

How can they even justify charging a fare for “public transit”. America is the wealthiest country on the planet and this service should be free as it is clearly discriminatory against low income/minimum wage earners and “people of color.” /s

Obviously the turnstiles are racists. Eric Holder explained to us that the only explanation for anything that disproportionately effects black people is racism. That’s how we know abortion, high blood pressure and sickle cell anemia are racist.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think the problem for fare beaters is the hassle of paying, it’s the idea of paying...
Actually my employer pays for them. I submit them on my expense report. So if people don’t like paying for the subway, get a job and start submitting those expense reports on Concur. (Nice app by the way)
If the cops are arresting more blacks and latinos than whites, it just shows the cops are racist. If the system were fair, statistics would show that blacks, latinos, and whites were being arrested in the same proportion as they exist in the population.
From now on, any arrest/summons of a black or latino for fare avoidance should be signed off on by a transportation supervisor who is appointed by an integrated Community Board.
