Unless unborn females are counted as part of a country’s population, i am not sure why abortion is cited as a reason for the large number of missing women.

If you look at the most impoverished nations in the world, all but a few of the top 20 are in Africa, and political corruption and violence are major contributors to the suffering in these countries. The UN is more interested in hanging out in NYC than doing anything constructive in Africa.

I have two problems with it - First is that there should be some sort of fixed ratio between the TWO sexes. Just because there are two does this mean there should be equal numbers of each? Second and less important is how the number was derived - as I said earlier pulled out of someone’s backside.
Birth rates in India, China and other Asian countries have skewed birth rates. There are several percent more males born than naturally occurs.
China’s issue was partially due to the one child policy and may not be as bad as expected. If someone had a boy, they reported it immediately. If they had an illegal girls, they sometimes hid it, put it up for adoption, waited a couple of years to scrape together the fine. This means that in China, there are a few million more girls registered at age six than at birth.
Compare this to India where they have dozens of villages reporting NO female births and fewer girls at age 6 than at birth. They actually are aborting 10-20% of the female infants, and the girls that are born are far more likely to die.
