Bears can run faster than a human on a bike. I know this from a close encounter with a Black Bear. Luckily we both scared each other, but the bear passed me like I was standing still.

There is a video out there. These bears can catch the bike easily. Only if he had a steep downslope and could hit max speed. But the bear has the advantage. Bike takes time to
get moving.
