A 14-year-old girl in a black veil walked onto the road, raised her hands and made a plea to the soldiers nearby. She had been strapped to a suicide bomb and didnt want to die.
It was explosives specialist Randy Iljesenis turn to defuse the girl, one in an army of child bombers deployed across northeast Nigeria by jihadist group Boko Haram. He grabbed a pair of fabric scissors, mouthed a brief prayer and slowed his breathing. He began to slice into her bomb-strapped belt. Some of his closest friends had died this way.
...In a gruesome turn, they are often strapped to childrenmostly girlsby jihadist terrorist groups.
The bomb squads receive some of their training from a traveling boot camp of U.S. ordnance experts schooled on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. They arent imparting a skill as much as a state of mind: a mix of courage and composure that can be sparked in a classroom but only truly learned in the live-or-die moments before the puzzle of a live bomb.
Last year, 57 children died in northern Nigeria after being strapped with explosives by Boko Haram,
Mr. Iljeseni has defused dozens of human-borne explosives. He compares his work to crossing a river.
Or, or. It is these two simple words, he says. Or you come out alive, or you come out dead.
...a detachment of American trainers began rotating through Nigeria, passing on the hard lessons its soldiers had taken from Iraq. With IEDs, theres a million different ways they can be made, so we teach them the thinking, said Katie van Dwy, a U.S. Army ordnance trainer who has made four trips to Lake Chad. We learn a lot from [trainees]
.They will come up with scenarios we would not have thought of.

It is a long and disturbing article, many young girls are mentioned, most survived, not all. Photos of the survivers too!
Re-Reading the article and looking at the photos just rips your heart out. Not destruction and gore, but the eyes of the survivors.
I will attempt to answer any questions, but I was recently dinged for posting too much and do not want to cause trouble.
I copied this from FR about a week ago, regrettably, I did not keep the posters name:

Bookmarklets - Get around paywalls, Fancy text for FB, Legal hacking tricks made easy!, Codepen, April 23, 2019, posted by Bon Mots. It has worked really well for me. I’ll get a Twitter page with multiple Tweets and usually one links me to the full article. Kudos to Bon Mots for posting this solution back in April.
Here’s the direct link: Bookmarklets. Drag the “Paywall Killer” to your bookmark bar. I renamed mine simply “Paywall.”
I actually coded a paywall penetration tester so that you can try various methods of getting past a paywall. One of them usually works unless its a hard paywall - these tricks are all client side.

Drag the Paywall Penetration Tester to your bookmarks bar and play with it when you find a paywall.
Yes, two girls mentioned and pictured both survived. Both were apparently kidnapped as pre-teens, 'married' to Boko Haram (BH) terrorists, and 'volun-told' to be martyrs. One of them, a native Muslim, is now employed by a mosque to do a bomb check on female attendees.
It is an absolute nightmare there as the BH follows the old routine of a constant cycle of 'improvement' in disguising and trapping these bombs.
I’ve worked with a lot of Nigerians over the years, they’ve all been good people.
Really, there are enough good people in Nigeria to make it an economic powerhouse, but there’s just too many other bad characters there holding them back.
Ive worked with a lot of Nigerians over the years, theyve all been good people.
I worked with just two, both graduate engineers and real gentlemen with a very good sense of humor.
One a Canadian the other a US Citizen and a US Navy veteran.
When I had the time I’d ask dumb questions, like what kind of rifle did you carry? ??? For the lions and tigers when you left the house???
No rifles; all the animals were in the zoo!
The Canadain worked way north on a mining project, does it ever get warm?
Oh yes! It warms by the 4th of July, he said in a pleasant English accent. Then you can take your long underwear off...wash it and put it back on!
Besides fun, they were helpful and productive workers.
Sad for me to think of them in light of this article.
The phrase “alive jihadist” should become a oxymoron.
She said white men commit most killings and we all need to be profiled.
