Fagen/Becker/Nichols were always going for the best sound quality of their albums.

On mixing “Katy Lied”, they used high-end audiophile Audio Research tube amplifiers to drive Magnepan loudspeakers - a design that looks like a large screen.

A friend of mine remastered “Katy Lied” but due to contractual limits, the project was stopped and his mastering was destroyed. There are a few “out there” and, reportedly, have THE best sound quality of all the commercial versions of “Katy Lied”.

It’s a shame the dbx screwed what could have been an even better album project.

IIRC, someone stole masters of “Aja” and it’s why that album has never been remixed into surround. Fagen & Becker even offered a reward for those masters...but no one came forward.

Larry Carlton is one of my favorite guitarists although I’ve just come to that conclusion recently thanks to youtube. My wife knows a Baltimore drummer named Dennis Chambers who played with Steely Dan when their live record “Alive in America” was recorded at various shows in the mid ‘90’s. Dennis plays a mind-blowing intro on “Bodhisattva”.

In the fall of 1967 before a I reported for induction, a couple of friends from Hartwick College and I drove over to Bard which is in Duchess County on the Hudson so hang out. We attended a free movie where there were a couple of hundred students openly smoking pot. Fagen and Becker attended and met at Bard.

Living in South Florida in my formative years, Walk Between the Raindrops brings back a lot of memories.
