Nearly fifty years after it was written, Free Bird is still the signature concert closer for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose final farewell tour wraps up in October in Manchester, Tennessee. Founding members Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins wrote the song in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1970, and it wasnt long before Free Bird and its extended guitar solo near the end became one of the bands most well-known tunes and a live-show favorite.

I’ve always wondered if (1) They always played the solo way each way, and (2) if anybody would notice if the solo went wierd and different one time.
One of the two songs you’re not allowed to play in guitar stores.
Why is that? (I am not a musician in any form)
Understandable. Whats the other?
Ive seen some interesting reactions to audience requests for Free Bird over the years.
Gotta be “Stairway to Heaven”
I’ve never heard the song. Yes, that is true.
Unless I heard it and didn’t know the name.
Probably the most overrated overplayed song on the radio.
Drunken audience requests for FREE BIRD! have been a staple at rock shows for 4 decades, at non-Lynyrd Skynyrd shows. Said requests are typically not well received.
Realize the song was heavily over-played on radio in the late 70s.
I should have been able to figure that out. Thats got to be it.
And bar jukeboxes. I remember one chick that was the only song she would play. Over and over and over and.....
The song that has burnt more thumbs with cheap lighters than any other.
Lots of overplayed songs much worse than lynyrd skynyrd. Micheal Jacksons beat it for starters....
Stairway to Heaven.
Overplayed but undeniably great. And that ultra juicy stratocaster tone — truly epic.
Overplayed in the stores. Imagine every kid that wants a guitar and tries their favorite. Then imagine the guys behind the counter hearing the same bit every day...
And stairway to heaven another overplayed song on the radio. After 1000 times just saying
Never “got” Free Bird.
Except in “Adventure”.
