‘The Lion King’ Ruling B.O. With $192M-$200M: Record Opening For July & Jon Favreau
Deadline ^ | July 20, 2019 | Anthony D'Alessandro

Saturday AM Update: While it’s clear that The Lion King is bound to be the king of July, overtaking Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.1M), the pic, after clocking an estimated $78.5M yesterday, is now headed to $192M-$200M for the weekend, which, for the second half of the calendar year, is the third-best opening after Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9M) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220M). For director Jon Favreau, Lion King is easily the best opening of his career, leaping far beyond the debut of Iron Man 2 ($128M.1).

How much front-loading will occur continues to be the question, and some are seeing a -15% ease from Friday’s number (which includes Thursday’s $23M previews). For Disney, remaking this movie is like remaking Star Wars. It’s one one of their most beloved (some may argue their most beloved) animated classics. While other Disney films like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin have added different musical numbers, with the latter truly wowing its re-interpretation by director Guy Ritchie and Will Smith, you don’t want to mess around with The Lion King (Hello, James Earl Jones continues to voice one of the lead roles, Mufasa). And while critics (at 55% Rotten) have sniped that it’s too close to the original 1994 movie, that’s part of the point here in order to pull in a massive crowd, and to make Lion King self-fulfilling prophesy at the box office. Jon Favreau’s Lion King gets an A CinemaScore and 4 stars throughout with general audiences, parents, and kids under 12 on PostTrak.

People keep complaining about there being too many remakes and sequels, yet they keep going out in droves to see them. Disney will probably remake every animated classic movie at the rate things are going.

And when they finish remaking them, they’ll start over again. By the end of this cycle, all the characters will be black or muslim.

Yep, the ongoing story of remakes and sequels continues.

Someone told me that there’s a major reason for so many remakes and sequels.

And that reason is that the bean counters are in charge.

A movie which was a big hit movie, already has a built in audience, so the bean counters can easily predict a sequel will make “x” amount of revenue. And that should translate into a profit.

Any new movies coming out, it becomes a roll of the dice as to whether it will be profitable and popular. But a recycled movie, already has that built in fan base who will go see the latest sequel or remake.

I have to disagree. By that time, black / muslim will be old hat, and they’ll all be sexless or transgender.

It opened on 4,725 locations.

That’s a record, IIRC.

Likely has something to do with it.

SuperMan XVI

Avengers XXXIV

Lion King XVIII

SpideyPerson XII

Any new movies coming out, it becomes a roll of the dice as to whether it will be profitable and popular. Samuel Goldwyn was a gambler. He made movies the same way he played poker. Bet big, win big.

I was just thinking the same thing.

There must be a bunch of air heads in entertainment today.

Not a good serial since Knots Landing, not well done classics like Masterpiece Theater used be, and not a good sitcom since Frasier.

There seems to be a Freudian explosion in Hollywood.

It seems all the comedy writers have migrated to commercials.

Well, even the so called comedy shows have to be politically correct nowadays.

I’m sure we can all think of shows from the past, that couldn’t be made today.

55% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Seemed like a dumb idea to me as the original animated was nearly perfect.
