I was brought often to that museum by my mother while I was growing up, and it was an important part of our Art History education at University of Chicago, so the images bring back fond memories for me.

Marie Cassatt is another great painter of that time and of that approach. She incorporated bright sunlight with minimal shadowing. Her emphasis was mainly on two dimensional chromatic design, contrasted with neutral backgrounds.

So different than someone like the great Maxfield Parrish, who excelled in both chromatic design and modeling of the figure. Maxfield’s emphasis was often one of scale and depth.

I, too, grew up visiting the Chicago Art Institute. As a pre-teenager, my mom would give me a dollar for eats plus two dimes for the El train that took me from suburban Oak Park to the Art Institute, the Field Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Planetarium, the Aquarium, etc....all free to school kids.

I prowled these magnificent edifices for years during summer vacations, viewing countless original art masterpieces plus absorbing the history and knowledge available to my developing mind in all of these famous museums. Thanks, mom!

I really feel sorry for so many young people today who cannot or will not avail themselves of the opportunities I had growing up. Too often, their search for knowledge is satisfied by walking the malls poking endless text messages on hand-thingies and chattering endlessly to friends on ear-thingies plastered permanently to their ears.

Thanks to you, Mairdie, for posting the lovely impressionistic Morisot to share with us. Much appreciated.
