Its 2019. Television is at the zenith of its powers of influence and, in the real world, times are troubled, fueled by existential dread, blatant racism, xenophobia, and sexism, much of it funneled straight from the White House. If TV wants to be the dominant art form, then it must hold itself to a higher standard of conversation, a standard that that its current crop of prestige dramas, including The Handmaids Tale, Big Little Lies, and recently concluded cultural phenomenon Game of Thrones, fall, repeatedly and spectacularly, short of.
Too often these shows and many others, at many other networks want to tell unique and nuanced stories, but because of the homogenous nature of those in charge, end up creating shows offering identical points of view. It becomes myopic and verges on cognitive dissonance because while the world is slowly but surely realizing that people other than white men have stories to be told and celebrated, TV has yet to catch up.
Its a failure, not of imagination, but of recognizing all of the things that you dont know and working to surround yourself with and listen to people as unlike you as possible, the better to build a world that reflects our own

“Its 2019. Television is at the zenith of its powers of influence”
no, it isn’t.
Lost me at the first sentence.
TV has always been a wasteland, but today the number of people who realize that it is a wasteland is much greater. I avoid the whole thing as an absolute joke. A lot of people do the same.
Yeah, that gave me pause, too. TV’s zenith was probably fifty years ago, when America gathered around the same three networks to share common culture. If this fool can’t find something he likes on hundreds of cable channels, he need to take up knitting.
I haven’t watched a new tv drama in years, since the Sopranos, and probably won’t for awhile.
The promos for the new shows are dripping with political correctness.
Every show has minorities in the lead roles, brainy black kids who want to be astronauts or scientists and women smarter than stupid men. Which is fine, but doesn’t reflect the real world.
I guessed that she’s a white feminist.
PC LGBT shows fail every time they’re tried. Look at Love Island (umm, no, don’t look at it) but it’s failing right out of the gate.
Maybe black feminist dramas will succeed?
The best TV shows by far have been made in the last decade or two. The problem is there’s so much crap (especially on the broadcast networks) it takes a little work and $ to find them.
I found the article confusing, maybe even conflicted. The excerpt almost seemed to be saying almost the exact opposite of what I’m seeing on TV. I’m pretty tired though. Maybe I’ll check back after I get some z’s and see if it makes any more sense.
(...fueled by existential dread, blatant racism, xenophobia, and sexism, much of it funneled straight from the White House.)
Not interested in reading beyond this obvious smear.
Reading the first sentences of the post I was assuming it was parody or satire.
It turns out this goof is serious.
We cut our cable 3 years ago this month.
With the exception of a handful of CBS shows, we don’t watch ABCNNBCBS and Faux.
Sling Blue is our provider and for $25 per month, we don’t get ESPN, ABC nor Disney.
ESPN, ABC nor Disney get any monthly $’s from us.
So whatever the left wing maggots @ ABCNNBCBS do with their tv shows and fake news, we don’t care.
Last but not least, we are saving over $200 per month by cutting our Comcast cable.
Well, there's a surprise. A white female feminist finds the problem with white female feminism in television is white males. Astounding conclusion.
We are ending cable in September. We never watch the drek and are paying for the privilege of supporting it.
Unfortunately, the housesitter needs the fix.
Every time I observe what my MIL is watch in her demented state as I walk through.
It’s always some woman pursuing justice against some evil white man character.
So they could ease into it by letting blacks and homosexuals appear in commercials.

Books are to movies what comic books are to TV. Television is just modern Pulp Fiction. Sterotypes and simple stories make up the bulk of programing. Some better than others. Trying to become PC has not worked with TV or Comic Books.
I refuse to watch shows that promote homosexuality, I refuse to buy products that push an agenda of interracial couples instead of pushing an ad for their product, I will not watch the weather channel blather on about climate change and I never watch network news or late shows for obvious reasons. I do not watch the NFL or women’s soccer and will not have Nike products in my house, again for obvious reasons. Call me any name you want to call me but my money goes elsewhere or stays in my pocket.
