João Gilberto: Brazilian 'father of bossa nova' dies aged 88
Influential Brazilian musician João Gilberto has died aged 88.
The singer and composer was known best as a pioneer of the bossa nova genre, which found international popularity in the 1960s.
Reports say Gilberto died at home in Rio de Janeiro after a period of illness. His son confirmed the news of his death in a Saturday Facebook post.
"His fight was noble, he tried to maintain dignity," Marcelo Gilberto said.
Born in the north-east state of Bahia in 1931, Gilberto began singing aged 18.

His release of the record Chega de Saudade in the late 1950s was considered a game-changer for Brazilian music.
Gilberto's style - mixing traditional and modern musical influences - inspired bossa nova, or new trend, music and many other artists after him.
In 1964, he famously collaborated with America saxophone player Stan Getz. Their album sold millions of copies and won international praise, including a US Grammy for Album of the year.

João Gilberto
A giant still.
Lets have Bossa Novas in the canteen.
Bkmk
Joao Gilberto was still alive???
RIP
I always liked the term “Bossa Nova”.
She cute... And a great voice too.
That singer was Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto's wife.
Here is the music: Astrud Gilberto - "Number One to the Sun".
The words don't happen until 0:45 on the video.
Their daughter Bebel is pretty good too. Here's one of her songs: River Song - Bebel Gilberto.
I still listen to him on youtube. Thanks for the link, beat me to it. My fave song was “The Wave.” As I understand it, Frank Sinatra wrote the gorgeous lyrics:
“So close your eyes
For thats a lovely way to be
Aware of things your heart alone was meant to see...”
GREAT pianist Oscar Peterson played the best version of The Wave. I actually saw him at the London House in Chicago playing it....gee, I’m dating myself, but those were really sweet times. So glad I lived then and am still enjoying it now.

Have the original vinyl...never gets old...always perfect.

No kidding! Throw in Ahmad Jamal, Dave Brubeck, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and all the other jazz greats. 3rd Beefeater martini, a fine Macanuudo...when America was still America. Alas, I knew it well!
Astrud Gilberto had about as smooth, sultry and sexy a voice as they make.
RIP Sr. Gilberto...you were one of the greats.
RIP. I still love listening to your music.
Thank you for posting that Eastern commercial, what memories it brings back of being young and anxious to travel. Those were the days when flying seemed glamorous, and that commercial was a big reason why.
I don't think it's presumptuous of Brazilians to refer to Jobim as "Brazil's Gershwin," it's a complement to Gershwin. Both wrote music that will live forever.
