I agree, and I love dogs. Have two Maltepoos and the 4lb female will kill birds and lizards if I let her.
Look, it's all about genetics, environment plays a part but petting a Tasmanian devil isn't gonna make it a pet. MOST,I'd say 95% of all pit-bull/terriers alive today are related to fighting dogs. It's the backyard fighters/breeders who are mating dogs for fighting and profit. I'd bet none of the killer dogs come from show dog breeders. How many litters can a dog have per year? Where do they all go? The puppy you buy from the paper or the dog you get at a shelter can have a sire, grand sire or great grand sire still alive fighting in a ring. That's the genetic roulette you play with the pit bulls out there. It's like having an orphanage full of children and only 10% do not have violent/killer/criminal parents. And you don't know which ones don't. Genetics are why pit bulls and not Lhasa Apsos are picked to be violent. It's in their nature and today's gene pool is polluted with dangerous bloodlines. Too many other breeds to have if you really love dogs instead of Godzilla on a leash.

I live in a high-rise apartment. A while back, the [down] elevator opened up on my floor to reveal a wispy 9-year old girl with a pit bull on a leash. Seeing that she didn’t have “Hold Fast” tattooed on her knuckles, I waited for the next car. No way was I going to put myself in a 10sqft space with that combo, a recipe for strife if ever there was. Live and learn, or is it learn and live? Haven’t seen her since, must have been a visitor.

Rural Arizona here. City people come out to our little desert community and drop off their unwanted pets all the time. Ferals start showing up, but usually only two or three at a time. Feel sorry for ‘em but don’t want any.

I usually sit on the shaded porch and read, accompanied by a glass of wine. Pretty soon I drift off. Woke up one time because I felt something wet on my knee. Here’s the BIG dog checking me out. I wasn’t scared as he wasn’t aggressive and just talked to him in a conversational tone. He didn’t find anything interesting and just wandered off.

From then on, I bring out my Judge revolver along with my wine. Same thing when the wife brings the garbage over to the Community Dumpster on the corner - I ride “shotgun”, so to speak, from the porch.

You were wrong.

Everything I said was fully warranted.

These dogs were bred as work dogs to wrestle down cattle.
There is always a possibility of a dangerous edge emerging from their breeding, and people working with them need to have the same awareness and physical strength which ranchers working with bulls need.

Having these animals around children is like having a running chainsaw around children.

After the 2nd time a pit bull attacked my lab puppy with no provocation, I got my concealed carry license and now carry all the time. I also avoid public dog parks due to irresponsible owners. If there is another instance like the first two, I will personally see to it that its fatal for the pit bull.

While all of that may be true, any dog can be dangerous, especially to children.

Personally, I wouldn’t own a pit, and I certainly wouldn’t let children around a pit ever.

But I also have 3 German Shepherds, one of which is a huge male named Max. He is the sweetest dog, so affectionate, but Max can also be dangerous, even to children.

I have to protect everyone from him, and I have to protect him from everyone, because if someone approaches him innocently in a manner he doesn’t like not knowing how he is, things can go south.

There are certain breeds of dogs that require experienced handlers familiar with the breed, but even then a mistake can happen anytime.

Wild animals are still a good case for it.

Both two legged and four legged.

I know nothing about dogs, and specifically pit bulls.

See, that is the problem. Most people do not understand that dogs have been bred for certain purposes/jobs. I would usually have a dog from the Herding breeds, I just like the intelligence. Hubby and I are older now, so we have a "companion" dog, a toy poodle. What we didn't understand is that we are HIS companions, not the other way around.

Dogs are bred for herding, hunting, retrieving, etc. I once had a lovely little Shetland Sheepdog. One day my mom has over some lady friends of hers and as everyone is getting ready to leave, I notice that the Sheltie had separated them into little groups and was weaving in and out and around the little groups. She had "herded" them. Now, I never taught her to do that. She had never seen a sheep in her life. But, the instinct is there. It has been bred into them.

Now, a Pit Bull was bred to kill things. Either in a dog fighting type of arena; or, per it's name, in a pit with a bull to see who would come out on top. Usually the pit bull. Also, I have recently learned that pit bulls have teeth that interlock. It made a certain sense considering how badly they damage their victims when they bite them. The only other creature that I know of, that has those type of teeth, is a shark. I suppose for the same reason; once they get a hold of their prey, the prey has a very tough time getting away, and, even if they do, they are very damaged in the process.

These dogs were not meant to be family pets. They were never meant to live in the house with the family; and, most especially not around children.

I can't recommend enough to people looking for a dog as a family pet, to do some research into what the dog was originally bred to do. You will get an idea of the dog's personality that way.

A pit bull is not just another dog. They are not a collie or a lab or a golden retriever. I wish people could just understand that; and, not buy into the B.S. from the animal activists that every dog fits every person or any circumstance. They don't.

Oh, is that an “apricot” standard sized poodle? We got an apricot toy poodle who is almost 2 yrs. old at this point. Unfortunately, the apricot color is gone, so is the red color that his ears were; and, it has been replaced with a combo of cream color and tan. I am a little disappointed as I actually really liked the apricot.

So, we’re supposed to ban certain dogs because of the way they look? You sound like the judge who “couldn’t define pornography but he knew it if he say it”. Just like the gun banners want to ban certain guns because of the way they look. Big Scary Dogs? Big Scary Guns?

We’ll just empower the government to come into our homes and ban just any dog they want because of the way they look?

And, no, I do not own a pit bull. However, I have owned great danes and english mastiffs, breeds on some of the proposed breeds to ban.

“So, please provide a legally sufficient definition of a pit bull”

Were the “pit” fighting dogs bred with certain teeth conformation and strong jaws that could withstand attempts to pull away, and a stout musculature?

By brother in law suffered a great amount of permanent damage to his left arm during an unprovoked attack (at a BBQ) by a pit/mastiff. The owner didn’t sugar coat the incident and had the dog put down. The neighbors down the street grand daughter got bit up pretty bad by their pit mix, and my nextdoor neighbors daughter was launched at and bitten by the pet Golden Retriever, which was also put down.

Because in the city/suburbs people need to be armed all the time. I’m joking. People should not have to constantly be in fear of their life because the government is so inept, corrupt, pathetic that stray dogs attack people. Would you say the same stupid statement if it was an 11 year old child?

Why is it that the federal, state and local governments take almost 60 percent of my labor to pay idiots to do nothing. Yeah it’s the mans fault for not being armed. Your an ass. Our country is so screwed. Tax the hell out of everyone & everything and get killed by stray/wild/lose dogs. Yet it’s his fault.

That isn’t the kind of definition you could use in court to prove a dog is a pit bull. These attempts at definitions are the equivalent of “Big Scary Looking Dog”. I know one when I see one isn’t a legal definition. If you’re going to take someone’s property, you have to be able to define the property. “Big Scary Dog Bad” isn’t a good reason.

5 Principles of Responsible Dog Ownership
Contain, Control, Train, Maintain and Socialize

Yep.

And I wonder what percentage of dog owners are "responsible" under those guidelines? In my experience, not a large number.

Yet my daughter owned 2 rescues (one passed away last year) and at the same fostered at least a dozen pits or pit mixes from the rescue organization she helped out.

Some of these fosters came for a weekend when she visited. I'll say this, by the time the dogs were adopted, she had them socialized. I enjoyed every visit she made with a foster.

There is a long list of things of which people should not be in fear or apprehension of (but are) because of the useless and corrupt government. One of which is the government.

The government is not here to protect us. Other than with the military to repel an invasion.
The government is here to control our lives; if we get killed by an illegal alien or mauled by feral dogs, too bad - so sad.

I can’t be held responsible for anyone’s inability to understand my post. har har har.

A lot of rabid pit haters seem to think when I criticize the usually horrible and always incomplete reporting regarding dog attacks etc, that I am defending bad dogs. No, if someone hates pitties I am not going to try to change their mind.

But I am going to point out the fallacy of reaching conclusions reached by reading half ass crap reporting.
