Just don’t force me to own one and agree that all those who pass the legislation putting them on the road agree to the same fate as anyone who suffers because of a malfunction or something unforeseen.

I am quite amazed how quickly the technology advanced. I always assumed it would require some sort of sensors in the roads but nope. Cell/GPS is enough, just amazing.

The technology simply isn't there yet, and neither is the road infrastructure to support it. You can hardly expect self-driving cars to navigate traffic lanes when poor road maintenance means the lane markers are barely visible. And good luck getting any new infrastructure in place to support self-driving cars when states won't even spend the gasoline taxes meant for road maintenance to fix gaping potholes.

But I imagine self-driving will get there sooner or later - most likely 10 or 15 years from now. Given how badly many people drive, it'll probably be a net positive and save some lives. Hopefully the Democrats and nanny-staters will let those of us who want to do our own driving continue, but who knows - millenials want to be taken care of, cradle to grave, and the future seems to belong to statists and control freaks.

Up to that point, the best we had ever seen was an empty dessert track, or an empty city that could go at 10-15 miles per hour.

DARPA did the Urban Challenge in 2007.

DARPA has been the instigator of the Internet, GPS, Stealth technologies, Gallium Arsenide computer chips.

DARPA has to be one of the best investments the U.S. Government ever made.
