All manufacturers are developing EVs, hoping that battery technology will soon supply a new miracle battery to power them with.
Making the car is a breeze. Making the battery is a nightmare..............
Making the battery is not carbon friendly.
Even Peter DeLorenzo of The AutoExtremist gets it, in his latest editorial and he is a bigger piston head curmudgeon than I, and note his hat tip to Solid State Batteries and Toyota towards the end....

All manufacturers are developing EVs because it is mandated. In CA, you must sell a certain percentage of EVs in order to sell conventional vehicles. I am unsure but I believe a few other states have similar laws. The manufacturers anticipate a similar federal law. I think the Obama admin passed some rule saying they had to work on EV development too.
Which is stupid....
The EV as a viable alternative to combustion, just like autonomous vehicles, is DECADES AWAY!
The first problem with EV was getting enough battery power to weight ratio to get 300ish miles to the charge.....
That (dispite the hype) hasn’t fully be realized even today, but its close (especially when you factor in need for things like heat and ac etc)....
The next problem is Charging Time... They are improving this, but nowhere near where it needs to be (300 miles on 10 minute charge then you are close on par with combustion).
The next problem after that (not remotely solved) are access to that 10 minute charge.... There is virtually ZERO distribution of this option currently and will cost countless billions to do...
Finally, once you have all of those problems solved, you need more power on the grid, meaning you need MORE power plants... A LOT MORE! And those are costly, time consuming to build... And will take a lot of political will to build out the grid to handle the demand...
This is the reality... EV’s as anything other than a niche commuter vehicle is NOWHERE near prime time capable, and it will be decades AT LEAST, before EV is the primary vehicle folks are purchasing.
