Windows 10 is finally receiving the upgrade everyone wanted and desperately needed. Or is it? Because now the details are being dug into, it is not what hundreds of millions of users will have expected.
Microsoft recently promised Windows 10 users "control, quality and transparency" for both minor updates and major upgrades with the release of Windows 10 1903. But the reality is actually far more complicated and it is Windows 10 Home users (who account for the lions share of the OSes 800M-strong userbase) who are hit hardest.
CNet breaks down the new rules, and Windows 10 Home users learn they can't automatically defer any updates. All you get is the option to manually pause updates for up to 35 days. Moreover, this is a process you must keep repeating every week to apply this delay to every new update. But the biggest complication and the one with very serious consequences is Microsoft will apply end-of-service dates to Windows 10 versions. When that date is hit, the next updates will be installed automatically, even if you have manually deferred them. In short: theres nothing you can do about it.

Possible solution for Win 10 Home users: upgrade to Win 10 Pro. Updates will still be a pain in the neck but you'll have more control over when the updates are applied.
Win ping
Lovin’ the little Linux machine that my daughter gave me.
Call me skeptical.
And there’s updates every time I turn around. That’s why I use my tablet for everything I can.
10 caused me to go get a Mac, it’s absolute rubbish, loved XP though.
Beware of Greek’s bearing gifts.
If I bought a car that needed to have patches installed to keep it running every couple of weeks for five years I would paint a lemon on the doors. Just sayin...
You can easily stop automatic downloads. No need to upgrade if you don't want to.
As they stuff more and more bloatware into it and call it “part of the operating system” [it isn’t] there is more need for updating.
If I had a choice, it would be linux all the way.
Get a Mac.
There's always Linux.
Linux Mint or OpenBSD - best Windows upgrade ever!
So you haven't bought a Tesla?
So I'm on a metered connection and STILL MS ran an update on me. Cost me my whole month's worth of data. I check it every hour or so when I'm not on the backup (like I am now) I disable the mysteriously restarting (all by itself) Update Service.
I used to like Windows, but now, not so much...
Read the third paragraph of the short excerpt. It clearly says you CANNOT stop the upgrades in Win 10 Home.
Of course, you could always turn off wifi. They aren’t going to send a SWAT team to your house to install it from a DVD-ROM. Well, at least I THINK they won’t.
“You can easily stop automatic downloads. No need to upgrade if you don’t want to.”
NO! You cannot stop automatic updates in W10.
(Ok you can if you never turn on your computer...)
Just stay away from WiFi and the Internet and you’ll be fine.
