I go to places where i want to see the sites and mingle with the people. I despise “all inclusive” resorts.
If you want all inclusive go to nearby hotel with an pool and room service and save the air fair. You can watch travel shoes on the in-room TV.
I remember my first wife. We went to Ensenada right in the tourist area and she didn’t want to get out off the car. That impacted my kids for 10 years.
Correspond with people in other countries. make friends when you travel. Then when you go somewhere you will know someone in country and won’t have to hunker down scared and hang out at the US style buffet for 7 days.
Puerto Vallarta is my fav. Cabo is my wife’s.
The state department has paper sonly for each country and gives you clues about what is happening and how safe the country is.
Also try travel sites where people have been recently.
When I was ten or so, this would be in the early fifties, my mom drove from Texas to Mexico City, Monterrey, and the tourist stops in between. It was just her, me, a slightly older female cousin, and my younger brother.
That would be insane today.
I fear the border areas. I live 40 miles from Mexico. used to go down to lobster village south of rosario. Two and half hours to cross coming back. High crime in TJ TJ stinks.
I’ll fly over the mess, but not drive though.

Some business associates in the nineties took me to TJ. I had to put my money and ID into my shoes to prevent losing them. One of the company plant managers actually lived in a hotel in TJ. He was one perverted Gringo.
The strip bars were ok. But the walk to and from, past all the free lance hookers and their pimps, was mildly threatening.
I have not been to Holland Raceway in years, so I can’t give you an answer to that. I live on the east side of Rochester now.
Another thing I wonder about his how many people go to a resort or on a cruise and come home really sick. No records are kept of that.
I’m not a traveler. I would assume Fiji is a safe bet?
