Had a friend who went on a hike by himself near Salt Lake City about 10 or 12 years ago and he encountered a buffalo. He moved very slowly and tried to not show any signs he was a threat. The animal charged him and he got hit and landed behind the buffalo and remained as still as he could. Eventually the beast wandered off and my friend managed to get back to the now closed ranger station. Some other visitors saw him and he ended up air evac’d to a hospital. Broken collar bone, broken ribs, punctured lung, concussion. He stayed in ICU for about a week. He says he was lucky. In a way, yup. He was forever known as Buffalo Jim after that. I think he even penned an article for Field and Stream or a mag like that.

a neighbor raised bison, got gored one day in the side- he got some kind of nasty infection/bacteria from it, and ended up dying from the complications-

There’s a huge bison ranch in a small town called Florence Colorado that’s fenced off . There are signs posted all over the place warning people not to stop and mess with them. The stupid tourists are always stopping to take selfies. They’re magnificent beasts and be respected.

Here’s Jim’s write up on the encounter. Happened at the same place as this new one...Antelope Island.
