I was fortunate enough to be there as a 16 year old kid on the exact day of the Bicentennial, July 4, 1976.
Language study group from Indiana high schools.
They parceled us up and we stayed overnight two nights in the homes of citizens of St. Mere Eglise (which means, Holy Mother Church).
The family I stayed with was a great old guy and his wife, a retired fireman.
I and one other student stayed in their house on a street in the center of town.
Nearby was the local hangout, named at the time, "Cafe le Six Juin" after D-Day.
They were great hosts and were super kind and reflected ALL the people I knew in Western France who were and still are almost all tremendously grateful for the United States liberating them.
It is a lie that the French hate the US... just the French Rat-Equivalents who form the basis of international socialism such as our Democrats.
The normal people do not hate America at all, they love us. You will see this with your own eyes.
Anyway, this guy made his own calvados, which is a super-strong apple brandy distilled from Normandy apples.
You probably have had it at some point. It is pure Normand.
The huge flesh and blood sacrifice made by Allies for the French people at Normandy can't ever be concealed or minimized by hipster communist revisionists.
Can't be done. This is why Western Civilization will never succumb to Communism and atheism.
You will find a ton of other sites (the German Cemetery, the Museum, the Church at St. Mere Eglise) to see and love in Normandy.
Wish I could be your tour guide. If you don't speak French and need a cheap guide, I am at your service.
Where to stay? Small B and Bs abound. Talk to the locals everywhere, they will be nice. They are the best.

The American cemetery featured in “Saving Private Ryan” is the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy. It overlooks Omaha Beach.
