His commie-left radical upbringing and current activism is probably a large part of what got him the role on that show in the first place. Lots of actors it seems clear to me were "promoted" to superstar careers. Rapper Tupac Shukar, for example, was closely related to Joanne Chesimard, aka Assata Shakur, and also to a former Black Panther who was part of the Brinks Truck robbery and triple murder in '81..

Both Smollett and Manafort were/are allied with enemies of America. Smollett via the revolutionary communist movement and 1960-80s Black Panther Party. Manafort via his assisting the Russians while working for Putin's puppet in the Ukraine. See my FR Home page for lots more on this.

I'm 99% convinced Manafort was a plant. The guy who introduced him to the Trump campaign, Thomas J. Barrack Jr, is a shady individual to say the least. It's been reported that he once said about Trump, "He's not only stupid, he's crazy".

Barrack was interviewed during the Special Counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, in particular regarding Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, Konstantin Kilimnik, Cambridge Analytica, the Trump campaign, the Trump transition team, and the financing of the Trump inauguration.[40][41]
