The very first two Pontiac Firebirds ever built are for sale on Ebay

The first two production Pontiac Firebirds ever built are currently up for sale, but if you want them, you have to buy the pair, because the seller wouldn’t have it any other way.

The 1967 coupe and convertible spent their early days as Pontiac show cars before being released for public sale and have reportedly been together ever since.

They didn’t lead a pampered life, however, and by 2014 were in pretty rough shape and not in running condition.

That’s when the folks at Gas Monkey Garage of “Fast and Loud” fame heard about them and bought the birds for $70,000 with a full restoration in mind.

The red convertible was the first off of GM’s Lordstown, Ohio, assembly line and has a 326 V8 and 3-speed automatic transmission, while the silver coupe features a high-output 326 V8 and 4-speed stick.

According to Dave Hall, the owner of Pontiac specialist Restore A Muscle Car, who is handling the eBay auction, it took about a year to bring the numbers-matching cars back to factory condition.

After they were done, the Firebirds were sold on the Discovery Channel show, but Gas Monkey Garage owner Richard Rawlings bought them back a couple of years later and is the one offering them for sale again now.

The cars are listed with a buy it now price of $285,000, which is roughly three times the market value of similar, but less significant 1967 Firebirds, but the auction runs through Monday.

No. 1 and No. 2 Firebirds...

Gas Monkey Garage Holy Grail Firebirds

Here at Gas Monkey Garage, you know we love old cars, especially if they have a story to tell.

Last week, Part 1 of 2 of our Holy Grail Firebirds episodes aired on the Discovery Channel.

The Gas Monkey community is like a family, and when something exciting happens to us, we can’t wait to share it with you.

And we’re more than a little excited that we found the guy who had the #1 and #2 1967 Pontiac Firebirds sitting in his garage.

As soon as we got the lead, we spent days on the Interwebs researching these cars, their history, you know, the whole enchilada.

Here’s what’s so badass about the two Firebirds:

1) The serial numbers for these Firebirds are 100001 and 100002. (Click numbers to see the build sheets)

2) We bought the cars from Chuck Alekinas, a former UK and NBA basketball player, for $70,000.

Chuck had bought the cars online and kept them in his garage until we found out about them and showed up at his door.

That price alone for the No. 1 and No. 2 Firebirds is reason enough to be excited about this.

3) These cars are Factory Show cars, as evidenced by the trim tag which says “[LOR]Show1”

I had a ‘72 Firebird Espirit back in high school. Only 5500 Firebirds were built that year due to auto workers strike. I would give my right arm to have that car today.

I have a 67 Camaro convertible I’ve had since 1978 I am restoring now. Close to the same car as the Firebird.

It will be better than new when I finish. But it is a LOT of work.

My first car was a 1968 Firebird and I had a 1969 a few years later. Wish I still had them sometimes.

Agree, had a white vinyl roof on my 72 Grand Prix and had it removed when it was re painted, car looked much smoother with it removed.

I hated that vinyl roof phase...

Agreed, for the Firebirds. On some other cars they looked good.

In any case, that's an otherwise beautiful car...color, hoodscoops, etc.
