Voter ID, a new proposal
vanity | 7 May 2019 | Andrew Sinclair

The cry for making elections valid continues. The proposals to date include, in part, using government-sourced ID. The main argument against imposing this requirement is the cost and difficulty getting the IDs, even though more and more businesses, services, and even governments are requiring them.

So, a slightly different proposal: have the election registrars take pictures of the voter as part of registration, after performing their current vetting actions. At election time, have the poll officers compare both signature and picture of the voter with the person in front of them.

Motor voter? The DMV already takes a picture, so the picture would go to the registrars, along with the signatures. This could be done electronically.

It does require that people register (and, in some cases, re-register), but the cost to the voter is zero dollars.

Anyone wanting to register voters would need to include a picture with the registration application. Preferably electronically. (This is a cost burden on the person doing the registration, not on the voter.)

Registration at the polls, and casting provisional ballots? Yeah, that's a problem. The solution is to require that registration happen at the office of the election registrar, and the voter can then cast a provisional ballot there.

TOPICS: Chit/Chat; Society
KEYWORDS: elections; voterid
Note that this isn't a proposal for a "voter card". Instead, the picture of the voter would be in the precinct book.

I live in PA. Our left-wing State Supreme Court has declared that voter ID’s violate the State Constitution.

What national proposal is going to address THAT?

would the quality of the black & white photos put together by the county board of elections vary by states and county?

I recall an ex girlfriend who had a voter id. It was issued by her state and had her thumb print on it. It presumably also had a picture on it - I don’t recall. She claimed it was strictly to be used for voting and nothing else. Her state was Sonora.

Well I feel the same about Taxes. The main argument against imposing Taxes is requirement about the cost and difficulty getting the Money to pay.

Excellent ideas you have there.

But Joe Biden said voter suppression is racist...

So your logical and sensible ideas will be thrown out by a liberal judge somewhere.

The up front costs would be substantial for new equipment and training, with maintenance an extra and recurring administrative charge. This would fall on already strained local elections budgets. Most elections offices would oppose it as costly and unnecessary, while it would not address absentee ballot and vote by mail fraud.

Yet none of these points are fatal and the logic of the proposal is a strong point in its favor.

Democrats will scream “voter suppression” on any attempt to combat vote fraud.

We could give poll watchers the right to take pictures of voters, to see if the same people show up at different polls, but they would scream “voter intimidation!” on that too.

What do you do about the 40% of people who vote early via mail-in ballot?

Well, maybe PA could not participate.

But after all the states legally have picture ID, then the Feds could spend all their efforts on voter fraud in those states that don’t have ID - ie PA et al.
