Correct. When I finished HS in mid 70’s, the girl that was third in the class had three years of Home Economics and minimal math and science. I was an athlete that did not much care and finished 11th. My course load was heavy on math and science. But she nosed out some that had a much more rigorous course of study.

Nothing has changed since the seventies except the way they weigh AP classes. Today’s AP class were the seventies standard class. We forced our daughter to take AP classes just because standard classes were designed for the lowest common denominator. She ended up with a low B Average while some of her friends were getting 3.8 and above taking only standard classes. She was accepted in two prestigious private schools but opted for a tier two State school because my GI Bill paid for around 80% of the degree. Turns out the her business school and music school were in the top tier for the State so it worked out. Those kids from HS with higher GPAs, majority dropped out, married and got pregnant not necessarily in that order. The article is one sided, why did she not stay where she was for her senior year? Did she switch specifically to get a higher GPA? Was she looking for a bump due to race? When you change schools you always risk a GPA adjustment, did she take a lot of standard classes to increase GPA. Here they had three levels standard, AP and Honors. I forget which but Honors or AP was dropped after my daughter graduated and while both were higher level one was considered more difficult and was weighted differently. Did she take classes that were AP at the school she left but not at the new school. My daughters school was a Baccalaureate School if you transferred in from another school, you lost some credits. Did this happen to this girl?
