Why the Next 'Game of Thrones' Book Isn't Coming Soon, Even If It's Finished
Fortune ^ | April 23, 2019 | DAN REILLY

[...] With the final episodes coming, there’s new speculation that he’s finished Winds, based on small hints like his unveiling of a new headshot and a friend saying the writer’s schedule has surprisingly cleared. (Martin’s publishers would not comment about the book or their general plans to Fortune). But if Martin really is done and the manuscript is turned in to his publisher, how quickly would fans be able to get it?

The answer is still months, at least, even if the book is fast-tracked. [...]

The show already deviated from the books. I think the end of the books will not be very similar to the end of the show. But I imagine the person on the iron throne at the end will be the same in both. But the path will differ.

I should think that for the purpose of selling more books, they most definitely should differ from the HBO series, and to do that they would need to let the series finish, then let they hype and controversy start up (either by grassroots or by intervention) about the differences. People who otherwise wouldn’t have bought the book would get interested. The fact that they want to wait is and indicator to me that this is all according to plan

Whether he intended to or not, what GRRM has done is create a wide open invitation for fan fiction. GRRM refused to get help (a good coauthor or ghostwriter) and indulged his writers’ block while the show got years ahead of Book Six and, at the rate GRRM writes, at least five years ahead of Book Seven. What GRRM is doing now is essentially a novelization of a movie, and the movie has established the canon. Quite a role reversal.

The irony there is, GRRM hates fan fiction.

He feels it’s lazy of other people to play in his world instead of making their own, to paraphrase the interview.
