FBI spying on Trump campaign may have continued after election, two senators say

Two Senate committee chairmen say text messages between anti-Trump FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page may be evidence the bureau spied on Trump campaign officials after the election.

In a letter sent Thursday to Attorney General William P. Barr, Finance Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican, and Homeland Security and Government Affairs Chairman Ron Johnson, Wisconsin Republican, say they have uncovered texts that may point to spying on campaign staff during the transition.

The letter highlights a series of texts between Mr. Strzok and his paramour, Ms. Page ahead of an upcoming FBI briefing with the Trump transition team. The pair appears to discuss using the meeting to develop relationships and gather information about transition officials.

At one point, the bureau officials appear to discuss bringing a confidential informant or “CI guy” into the meeting to assess the “demeanor” of unnamed individuals. It is unclear if the alleged informant attended the meeting.

Another text exchange floats the idea of bringing someone into the meeting to determine if Mr. Strzok and Ms. Page can develop “potential relationships” with transition team members.

“…In the course of our oversight work we have reviewed certain text messages that may show potential attempts by the FBI to conduct surveillance of President-elect Trump’s transition team,” write the senators.

Of course they continued spying on them after the election. Why would anyone think they didn’t?

In the text messages, the former FBI officials:

Discuss the possibility of developing “potential relationships” at a November 2016 FBI briefing for the Trump transition team

Specifically discuss sending “the CI [confidential informant] guy” to assess an unnamed person(s) “demeanor”

Strzok: Talking with Bill. Do we want Joe to go with Evanina instead of Charlie for a variety of reasons?

Page: Hmm. Not sure. Would it be unusual to have [sic] show up again? Maybe another agent from the team?

Strzok: Or, he’s “the CI guy.” Same.might [sic] make sense. He can assess if thete [sic] are any news [sic] Qs, or different demeanor. If Katie’s husband is there, he can see if there are people we can develop for potential relationships

Page: Should I ask Andy about it? Or Bill want to reach out for andy?

Strzok: I told him I’m sure we could ask you to make the swap if we thought it was smart. It’s not until Mon so Bill can always discuss with him tomorrow.

They spied before during and after his election and we need to get to the state where we’re starting to indict some of these people instead of just pontificating about what they might have done!

In their letter to Barr, the Senators pose a number of questions:

The nature of these communications, and the precise purpose of any attempts to “develop relationships” with Trump or Pence transition team staff are not immediately clear.

Were these efforts done to gain better communication between the respective parties, or were the briefings used as intelligence gathering operations?

Further, did any such surveillance activities continue beyond the inauguration, and in the event they did, were those activities subject to proper predication?

Any improper FBI surveillance activities that were conducted before or after the 2016 election must be brought to light and properly addressed.

And they started spying on him much earlier than previously thought.

It’s schadenfreud at its best.

Shows how suprememly confident they were. Hillary would win, and sweep it all under the rug.

None of this D/S conniving on “workstations” on our dime would ever see the light of day.

I was curious about post-inauguration activities as well. Before that (and after the election), it's apparently par for the course. But, it steps into the precarious afterwards.

Curious what you mean by "predication". Is the intended meaning to question if it was lone wolves acting versus direction from the powers higher up?

"Predication" meaning "was a predicate established."

In other words, was there some legitimate reason for the FBI to be spying on — and trying to entrap — members of the Trump campaign.

We all know the answer to that question was "no," but it must be asked anyway, in order to establish a legal case against the players.

The Attorney General talked about this in his testimony before the House on 9 April, in which he said that he was making an effort to discover if there was a "predicate" for the actions of the FBI and others.

That's Washington-speak for "was there a legal reason for investigating the political opposition, or was one party using the intelligence assets of the United States to do opposition research against the opposing party?"

Do you think? The Page FISA warrant was renewed three times up thru October 2017. Why is this even news?

What the hell was the Mueller Weissmann investigation all about that was spying. And now Nadler and Schiff are taking off taking up where Mueller and Weissmann left off.

“may be evidence the bureau spied on Trump campaign officials after the election.”

Didn’t we already know this? Bugging of the Oval Office was what sent Trump to work outside of the White House for a few weeks. The story was that they were revamping the HVAC system in the Oval Office.
