Lori Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli didn’t fully grasp that their alleged bribery in the college admissions scandal was illegal, a source familiar with the case tells PEOPLE.
“You read the complaint and they look like criminal masterminds,” the source tells PEOPLE. “But they really didn’t know the legalities of what was going on. They’re not lawyers and they’re not experts. They were parents who simply wanted to make sure that their daughters got into a good school.”

“Calling in favors, donating money to the alumni association, hiring consultants. Those are all things that parents do,” says the source. “And so they gave money to this consultant, not entirely knowing everything that was going to be done. When it all fell apart, nobody was as surprised as they were that they were in trouble.”

They gave money to charities. They put this on their tax returns. If they didn’t declare the deduction then, that’s not illegal.
I really see the guy who came to them, and promised to help get their kids in school is the one they need to get to.
I tried unsuccessfully at first to get to medical school. Had I the opportunity to donate to the school, and my family could afford it, we would have.
LOUGHLIN IS IN TROUBLE IF SHE PAID PEOPLE TO TAKE TESTS, ALTER TEST SCORES ETC. BUT PAYING THE CHARITY TO GET THIER KIDS IN SCHOOL? I DON’T SEE WHERE THIS IS ILLEGAL?

I always thought bribery was the cost of doing business with any institution, government or non-government, in America.

I’m from Chicago. My DAd, always carried $500 in small bills with him to pay people off. I’m not talking that it was always illegally, but to get a better seat a table, to better service etc. But occasionally to get out of ticket.

He waited 6 years for the fire dept to contact him to take the test and when he was called back to take the fireman test a diminutive lady he talked to there said she had waited since “Tuesday”.
Sounds like the old Myron Cohen joke about a guy who left some pants in a dry cleaners but got sent off the war before he could pick them up. Two years later, he returned to the cleaners and gave them his claim check. The proprietor said, “They’ll be ready Thursday.”

I guess my favorite of his concerns a man who was lying in his upstairs bed, dying. He smelled cookies cooking and called for his son to go downstairs and ask Momma for some of her wonderful cookies. The son left but came back empty handed.

As with just about every Deplorable here, I too never had the 500k needed to engage Mr. Singer to rig the system for my kids...but then again, I kept my kids out of public schools, so they were able to get into excellent universities based on merit.
Anyway, my point is that if you are loaded enough to have 500k laying around for stuff like this, perhaps one should spend a bit of money on having an attorney, to let you know whether what you’re doing is even legal. I have to admit, I would have assumed that doing what she did was certainly risky, and could have permanent consequences for her kids, as in never getting into another college if found out, but ILLEGAL, as in 20 to 40 years - please...no way would I have expected that level of risk...but then again, I don’t have that kind of money.

Loughlin allegedly agreed that they would tell the IRS that the money they paid was a charitable donation, and not used to secure Olivia Jade’s spot at USC. “So we just have to say we made a donation to your foundation and that’s it, end of story,” Loughlin allegedly said.”

The system is so bizarre there was a way to use it legally. If they'd paid for lessons or club fees so their children have, could and would have actually participated by actually playing the harp, being a hip hop dancer, being on the fencing or curling team or whatever, that's fine. It's part of the process to find schools that have a number of seniors graduating who have activities that your child will in fact participate in.
I didn’t even follow the story until I saw some start pleading guilty (I honestly assumed this BS was standard operating practice for rich parents of unqualified children). They’ll make an example of her - and race-baiters are following it closely. I saw reporters speaking to black people on the streets of NYC about this, and didn’t understand the connection at first. There seemed to be a consensus that they’d somehow cheated black students in particular out of those seats (I’m still not sure why, with that specific group).
Maybe, but her daughters weren’t exactly rowers or lacrosse players either - I think that was the point.
