I do not know Alan Detrich, but I am acquainted with his wife. I have followed his career for some years. He makes news when he sells a valuable specimen because the professional paleontologists don't like it. He collects his fossils legally, on private land and with the permission of the land owners and invites people to visit his finds. This specimen was in his barn for years. The University of Kansas is in the middle of another dust up, because of a find by one of their doctoral candidates, Robert DePalma who has made a major find of evidence of the debris resulting from the Chicxulub Asteroid event. He has been known to sell some of his fossil finds, apparently a major sin in that world.

In an open letter published last week, SVPs members said that it was regrettable that the fossil was exhibited before it could be studied. That action, which brought the fossil to the attention of hundreds or thousands of visitors, potentially enhanced its value, ... I wonder if it will prove my theory that all brontosauruses are thin at one end, much much thicker in the middle and then thin again at the far end.

The skeleton...was first discovered in 2013, on private land in Montana. It became the property of the man who discovered it, Alan Detrich, a professional fossil hunter If someone discovers something on my land he owns it instead of me? Or did the land owner already get his cut?

I placed two bids. One on that and one on the item right next to it - the Brooklyn Bridge. I’m hoping to win the bid on at least one of them.

Perhaps the scientists at University of Kansas Natural History Museum or somewhere else could bid on it.
It sounds like they just want access to it for free.

Someone could make a lot of money selling 3D printed T-rex skulls.

Elitism. Many academics and experts feel that they are entitled to control and moral judgement over everything related to their field.
The attitude is the worst with social scientists, which, IMHO, is why they are all statists and leftists.
Is someone who pays $2.5 million for a T-Rex fossil going to use it for target practice? They will probably protect and preserve it better than many museums.

If the Paleontologists are so worried about losing access to the fossil they can always chip in and buy it.

Being mad at people making money is just stupid.
I suppose they think they have the exclusive right to these kinds of things.
FWIW, I have a small T-rex skull, almost complete, sitting on my desk at this second. I traded about two years’ worth of flight lessons for it to a rancher and helped get it out of the dirt/shale with my own hands. Trying to figure out if its legal to take back to Israel.

A great many scientists worldwide seem to feel they are the only ones who should be allowed to handle anything old and/or unique.
