Criterion Collection President Peter Becker knew FilmStruck’s death was imminent, weeks in advance of news reports late last October. And long before industry luminaries ranging from Martin Scorsese to Bill Hader sent up flares to save the Turner Classic Movies streaming platform, Becker and his peers had a contingency plan to save FilmStruck’s Criterion Channel.

Filmstruck died last fall when Time Warner shuttered it. That took the famed Criterion Collection down along with it.

Its now back as the Criterion Channel. If you’re a classic movie buff, love classic movies or staples of world cinema, this is a must have.

The titles are worth the month-long free trial to the just-launched streaming service.

If the UI still sucks forget it. The old one was almost unusable and thats being generous.

It runs well on IOS and Roku. Enjoyed Cleo from 5 to 7, Bonheur and Richard III with Lawrence Olivier.

The last digitally restored and remastered, considered the best movie interpretation of Shakespeare. Period.

They don’t just stream movies, their blue ray special edition boxsets are sought after collector items.

It looks like the outsourced it and it works like all the others which is ok. The old one wasn’t worth the trouble and crashed constantly.

I have the Criterion Blu-ray of Richard III, which looks great in all its VistaVision glory. I have almost signed up for the Criterion channel, but it seems to be more foreign art-house films than classics. I think I would prefer a streaming version of TCM to a Criterion channel.

Joined over the weekend and watched John Woo’s LAST HURRAH FOR CHIVALRY (1979 chop-socky). Did quite a bit of searching the collection last night on the rollout and found just a few missing titles. Totally worth the $89 for a year.

They have Columbia film noir classics. They curate films from all the world but its a good mix.

What they’re doing is presenting movies that have been the most influential in cinema history.

Still worth watching even if you don’t find all of the curated selections to your taste.

I still have my Criterion Collection DVDs, and probably an old LaserDisc or two (need to check the boxes). Sold most of my other DVDs and CDs, but couldn’t bring myself to sell these. Glad to know they’re still around and streaming their work now.

Totally worth the $89 for a year.

You received the Charter Subscription rate. It is now about $100.00 per year.

They still sell physical media. So both complement each other. This kind of fare will never be mainstream but cinephiles just love movies that are unique and which don’t really fit conventional box office blockbuster norms.

Like France’s version of “GWTW” - Les Enfants du Paradis which is still running in French theaters after its premiere in 1945.

They’re doing a fabulous job! Yesterday I watched Mildred Pierce (Joan Crawford), Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps and several shorts and restoration explanations.
Today I watched a Columbia film noir, Murder By Contract with future TV doctor Vince Edwards. (Ben Casey)

Well worth the price.

I used to spend that much on Criterion Collection LDs in my youth. Totally worth it given the massive content and original contemporary films being produced specifically fir the channel.

I may do it. I remember spending upwards of $85 for their initial offering of Citizen Kane. I was up late into the night watching the film and then going through the bonus materials. I am looking forward to the Criterion release of Bondarchuk’s War and Peace in a couple of months.

I’m really impressed with the Channel. My gripe with other attempts was a limited access to the Collection. I’ve used it streaming on the PC and via app on iPad. I give the nod to the app for overall performance. Would like to try it on a good 4k TV.

I decided to invest the $100 for a year. I’ll check it out this weekend. Will probably watch some of the Columbia Noirs.
